Brazil grabs both South American tickets to LA 2028

Thamela Coradello & Victoria Lopes and Andre Stein & Renato Lima conquer the continental titles in Joao Pessoa

Brazil grabbed South America’s tickets to the Olympic beach volleyball tournaments at Los Angeles 2028 both for women and for men. Thamela Coradello & Victoria Lopes and Andre Stein & Renato Lima conquered the crowns at the CSV Beach Volleyball South American Championships in Joao Pessoa, Brazil on Sunday to secure Olympic berths for their country.

Top-seeded Thamela & Victoria cruised through the women’s tournament in Joao Pessoa without dropping a single set in six matches played. On Sunday’s last competition day in Brazil, they coped with the resistance of two Paraguayan pairs. In the semifinals, the Brazilian duo took a 2-0 (21-19, 21-11) win over 11^th-seeded Fiorella Nunez & Denisse Alvarez, and in the gold medal showdown, they triumphed with a 2-0 (26-24, 21-7) victory over Paris 2024 Olympians Giuliana Poletti Corrales & Michelle Valiente, seeded second.

Thamela & Victoria have not played at the Olympics before and if they get selected to represent Brazil at the LA 2028 Olympic Games, it will be their first time.

There was a Brazilian-Paraguayan clash for the third place in Joao Pessoa as well. Fio & Denise claimed the bronze after a 2-1 (18-21, 21-15, 15-8) upset of Verena Figueira & Thainara Feitosa, who had lost the other semifinal to Michelle & Corrales also in three sets, 2-1 (18-21, 21-14, 15-13).

After the men’s semifinals in Joao Pessoa on Sunday, it was already clear that the Olympic berth was going to Brazil as two home teams advanced to the final. In the semifinals, third-seeded Andre & Renato came back from a set down to take a 2-1 (19-21, 21-15, 15-6) victory over second-seeded Tomas Capogrosso & Nicolas Capogrosso of Argentina, while bracket leaders Evandro Oliveira & Arthur Mariano Lanci mastered a 2-0 (21-10, 21-18) sweep of their encounter with fourth-seeded Chilean standouts Marco Grimalt & Esteban Grimalt.

In the all-Brazilian gold medal showdown, Andre & Renato put together a 2-0 (21-16, 23-21) win over Evandro & Artur Lanci and conquered the South American throne. Andre Stein, who triumphed with the 2017 FIVB World Championship crown along with Evandro, has already played at the Olympics at Paris 2024. His current teammate Renato Lima, however, has no Olympic experience yet, and if he is selected for LA 2028, he will get to make his debut.

The men’s continental bronze went to the Grimalt cousins, who managed a 2-1 (21-23, 21-19, 15-11) turnaround in a hard-fought third-place match against the Capogrosso brothers.
