A little over a month after Turkish powerhouse VakifBank Istanbul won their fourth world title at the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship in Ankara, the club has released Beyond The Goal, a 21-minute video about the team’s successful campaign.
The documentary offers a day-by-day account of VakifBank’s participation in the event, with lots of behind-the-scenes footage, exclusive interviews, match highlights and emotional celebration.
In a goosebump moment, the video's narrative culminates with head coach Giovanni Guidetti's words to his team in the locker room before the gold medal match against incumbents Prosecco Doc Imoco Volley Conegliano of Italy.
“The more we want something, the more insistent we are on a certain outcome, the more difficult it can be to achieve it. So you have to be smooth, you have to loosen up, and that means I want to see you focused and smiling, like you smiled the first day, like you smiled the second day, like you smiled the third day, like you are smiling today… We’ll win because we play great, we’ll win because we’re a strong team, we’ll win because we are a better team than them, and we’ll keep smiling…” Guidetti told his players as they went on to battle it out for a tight but sweet 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-7) victory.
“I’m just super happy we finally took our revenge and in front of the best crowd ever!” said tournament MVP Isabelle Haak of Sweden after the final - referring to the fact that Imoco had defeated VakifBank the previous two times the clubs went head to head (2019 Club World Championship semifinal and the 2021 CEV Champions League final). “We had an amazing tournament, the team did so well, so we really deserved it and I am just beyond happy!”
