All set for U18 Beach Volleyball World Championship in Doha

The FIVB Beach Volleyball Under 18 World Championship will get underway on Tuesday in Doha, Qatar with over 50 nations vying for supremacy at the Al Gharafa Beach Courts.

This is the first FIVB Beach Volleyball U18 World Championship in more than 20 years and it’s the first time that the competition is being hosted in the Middle East.

A total of 32 boys’ pairs and 32 girls’ duos drawn from 55 countries will vie for the medals from 7 to 11 October.

Brazil are the most successful nation in the age group on the girls’ side, having celebrated four titles, followed by Germany, with three. Among the boys, Poland have the most victories, with five, followed by Brazil and Germany, with three each.

Brazil will have a strong team with the reigning South American girls champions, Isabela Sallaberry Cavalcanti and Ana Beatriz Sanches Francelino and boys champions, Thomas Mathias Endler and Felippe Prudencio Arruda Barbiero, all in the main draw in Doha to contest for the world title.

Germans Jonathan Bungert and Filo Wust, who are the reigning European champions will also start as favourites in the boys’ competition, while their compatriots Anna-Chiara Reformat and Rika Dieckmann, the European silver medalists, will hope to go one better on the global stage.

The Junk twins, Avery and Addison, will look to add another medal to their growing collection when they fly USA’s flag in Doha. Cash Essert and Spencer Smith are in the main draw for boys.

Hosts Qatar will lead the Asian cast having lined up two pairs in the main draw of each gender category. African champions, Bakary Ensa Kanyi and Abdallah Bah of the Gambia, line up in the boys’ competition with Volleyball Empowerment support while the girls’ champions Pamela Miyoum Bawa and Joy Lawrence of Nigeria will also be out to make a mark.

**FIVB Beach Volleyball U18 World Championship: Match Schedule and Results**

The tournament begins with qualification on 7 October, followed by pool play from 8 to 9 October, elimination rounds on 10 October and medal matches on 11 October.

On Tuesday, 24 teams will go head-to-head for the last four coveted spots in the main draw. They will join 28 directly qualified teams, making up 32 men’s and 32 women’s teams – a total of 64 – with representation from all continental federations.

The 32 teams will be split into 8 pools of 4 teams each, with the top 3 ranked teams in each pool (a total of 24 teams) advancing to the next phase of single elimination which will be played until the bronze and gold medal matches.
