Joao Simoes was born in 1986 in Leiria and started to play at the age of 13 in his hometown club SO Marinhense. During his 18 years career he also played for Esmoriz GC, Castelo Maia GC, Atlantico da Madalena, AJF Bastardo with whom he won in 2015/16 the Portuguese championships. After he transferred to SC Espinho with whom he won the Portuguese Cup. In 2017/18 he played for Sporting C.P. winning the National Championship. The 194-cm wingspiker is a very experienced player. He has also a career in the beach volley where he won the national championship. His first international cap was back in 2004 for the junior team. He is very tactical and clever in the attack and with good skills in reception and defense. He played with the National Team in the World League Group 2 in 2017. In 2018 he was in all the competitions and success of the National Team, such as securing a spot in the 2019 EuroVolley finals and wining in 2018 the Challenger Cup that granted the team access to this year’s edition of the VNL.
