Volleyball legend Mireya Luis chosen to lead new NORCECA Athletes’ Commission

FIVB Executive Vice-President and three-time Olympic gold medallist Alejandrina Mireya Luis Hernandez was yesterday chosen to lead the newly created North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) Athletes’ Commission during the virtual XXV NORCECA Congress.

For the creation of the commission, each of NORCECA’s four Zonal associations (the Caribbean, Eastern Caribbean, North Central and Central American Associations) were required to submit three candidates – one female, one indoor volleyball and one beach volleyball athlete.

An FIVB Executive Vice-President since 2018, Cuban volleyball legend Mireya Luis has a decorated volleyball career which included three Olympic gold medals, two FIVB Volleyball World Championship titles and a plethora of other awards and distinctions. She also currently serves as Vice-President of NORCECA and is a member of the Cuban Volleyball Federation.

Mireya Luis’ incredible career as an athlete, coupled with her extensive experience as a sports administrator, will prove an invaluable asset to NORCECA’s tireless efforts to grow and development volleyball and beach volleyball.

“NORCECA President Cristobal Marte Hoffiz trusted that each of NORCECA’s four zones would present their best volleyball and beach volleyball talent for this important commission. Through the NORCECA Athletes’ Commission, we will seek to ensure the voices of our athletes are heard and their feedback taken into account. I am very excited for this new opportunity and know that, with everyone’s support, we will achieve our goals and continue the development of volleyball in the region,” said Mireya Luis.
