Lots of tie-break drama on way to Tokyo quarterfinals

 

With six women’s and two men’s matches in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic beach volleyball tournament round of 16 played on Sunday, the first eight quarterfinalists emerged.

Latvia’s Tina Graudina and Anastasija Kravcenoka will go against Canada’s Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson in one of the matches for the women’s final four spots. Another one will set Brazil’s Ana Patricia Ramos and Rebecca Cavalcanti against Switzerland’s Anouk Verge-Depre and Joana Heidrich.

Laura Ludwig and Margareta Kozuch of Germany, as well as Mariafe Artacho and Taliqua Clancy of Australia, will find out their quarterfinal opponents on Monday, when the last two women’s eighth finals are played.

So will Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan and Norway’s Anders Mol and Christian Sorum, who won the men’s eighth finals on Sunday. The remaining six fixtures are scheduled for Monday.

As many as five of the day’s eight games were decided in tie-breakers.
