Fourteen teams from twelve countries are vying for four spots in the Main Draw of the third Sofia Open of the 2021 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour as the Qualification Tournament gets underway on Thursday at Sofia Beach on the outskirts of the Bulgarian capital.
Russia, who dominated the men's tournaments of the first two Sofia Open events, will be hoping to get a second team into the Main Draw, with top seeds of the qualifiers Vsevolod Bobrikov / Vladislav Mikhalev.
Petr Bakhnar / Valeriy Samoday, who won the Sofia 2 Open are directly in the Main Draw.
Earlier this season Aleksandr Kramarenko / Maksim Hudyakov of Russia had struck gold at the Sofia 1 tournament.
The qualifiers of this one-star event begin Thursday morning, ahead of the Main Draw which is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The qualifiers include two rounds of knockout play to determine the four teams that advance to the Main Draw.
This weekend's event in Sofia is for men only. The women's tournament of Sofia 3 will be held next week.
