Claes and Sponcil through third Cancun country quota

Two teams from the United States and one from Brazil secured the final spots in the qualifier of the third and last FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour 4-star tournament at the Cancun Hub on Tuesday at Playa Delfines.

USA’s Kelly Claes/Sarah Sponcil and Theo Brunner/Chaim Schalk and Brazil’s Barbara Seixas/Carol Solberg are the duos that advanced and will be back on the court for Wednesday’s qualifier, which will determine the final eight teams in each gender guaranteed a place in Thursday’s main draw.

The American women’s country quota was the only one to have multiple matches. In the first of them, Terese Cannon and Kelly Reeves defeated Sara Hughes and Emily Day 2-1 (19-21, 21-17, 15-13). In the second one, Claes and Sponcil advanced from the country quota for the third time in Mexico with a 2-0 (21-14, 21-18) victory over Cannon and Reeves.

Schalk and Brunner advanced for the second time in three attempts

The men’s country quota for American teams saw Brunner/Schalk and Miles Evans/Billy Kolinske play each other for the third time in Cancun. Schalk, a Rio 2016 Olympian, and Brunner, who had won the first meeting and lost the second, came out on top with a 2-0 (22-20, 21-14) triumph to move forward in the tournament.

Brazilian women’s teams faced the exact same situation with Barbara/Carol and Taina Bigi/Victoria Lopes going against each other for a third straight week. The veterans Barbara, a Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist, and Carol, who had won the second meeting after losing the first, repeated their strong performance to post a 2-0 (21-13, 21-19) to make it to the qualifier.
