Round of 16 line-ups emerge

The elimination brackets for the remainder of the men’s and the women’s beach volleyball tournaments at the Olympic Games in Tokyo were finalised on Saturday, as the pool stage was completed and the additional lucky-loser playoffs between some of the third-placed teams in the pools were played.

The dramatic last competition day in the men’s Pool B started with a surprising first win for Mexico’s Josue Gaxiola and Jose Luis Rubio over unbeaten Latvians Martins Plavins and Edgars Tocs. After 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) Mexico’s way, the pool was left wide open, with only Plavins and Tocs with a safe spot in the next round.

The deciding match between Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner of Czechia and Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy of ROC started with a first-set win for the Czechs. Had the world champs lost one more, they could well have had to start packing. However, they got their act together and stormed back to a 2-1 (19-21, 21-13, 15-8) victory and the first place in the pool, pushing Perusic and Schweiner bottom of the standings and out of contention.

On the women’s side, USA’s Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil mastered a complete turnaround in the match against Brazil’s Ana Patricia Ramos and Rebecca Cavalcanti to win by 2-1 (17-21, 21-19, 15-11) and top the final Pool D standings unbeaten.

The competition day finished with the four lucky-loser matches. Cuba’s Lidy Echeverria and Leila Martinez and Spain’s Liliana Fernаndez and Elsa Baquerizo claimed the last two available spots in the women’s round of 16. The Spanish men’s team, Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira, and Chile’s Marco Grimalt and Esteban Grimalt did the same on the men’s side.
