Chinese women’s and Brazilian men’s pairs prevailed in their respective quarterfinal matchups, to make it to the final four cast of the 2023 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Roi-Et on Saturday.

In the women’s quarterfinal draw that consisted of six European teams and two Asian sides, only China have cleared their path into the semifinals, following their strong weekend afternoon win over Estonia.

China’s Yan Xu and Zhou Mingli logged a 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) triumph over Estonia’s Kuivonen/Jürgenson to book the first women’s semifinal spot.

The Chinese pair started their day with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) victory against the home team’s S.Patcharaporn/Ch.Suchinna in the Round of 16.

They have collected four wins out of five matches, winning on two occasions against three European sides they faced so far.

On Sunday, the Asian duo will face their fourth European rival, Switzerland’s Leona Kernen & Annique Niederhauser, in the semifinal at 08:00 local time (01:00 UTC). The Swiss pair defeated Canada’s Sorra/Glagau in their quarterfinal matchup 2-0 (21-17, 21-17).

Poland’s Malgorzata Ciezkowska & Urszula Lunio and Desy Poiesz & Brecht Piersma will play in the second semifinal match at 08:50 (01:50 UTC)

Ciezkowska/Lunio and Poiesz/Piersma B. came up with quarterfinal wins against Austria’s Rabitsch Mag./Trailovic 2-0 (21-13, 21-13) and Thailand’s M.Salinda/B.Jidapa 2-0 (21-15, 21-14), respectively.

The women’s gold medal match will be at 16:00 (09:00 UTC) and the bronze medal match will be earlier at 13:00 (06:00 UTC) on Sunday, November 12.

In the first men’s quarterfinal clash, Brazil’s Pedro Augusto Sousa De Oliveira & Henrique Camboim de Barros secured their berth with a 2-0 21-15, 21-15) rout of Poland’s Lejawa/Beta.

The Brazilians will meet Timo Hammarberg & Tim Berger after the Austrians rallied from a set down to beat Sweden’s Andersson, E/Hölting Nilsson 2-1 (19-21, 21-15, 15-13). Their final four matchup will be played at 09:40 (02:40 UTC).

In the second matchup, Belgium’s Joppe Van Langendonck & Kyan Vercauteren continued their strong campaign at the expense of Chile’s Acevedo/Max. The Belgians recorded a 2-0 (21-12, 21-15) win over the Chileans to face top-ranked French duo Arthur Canet & Téo Rotar in the second semifinal at 10:30 (03:30 UTC).

The Frenchmen outplayed Italy’s Hanni, T./Burgmann with a 2-0 (21-15, 21-16) victory.

The men’s medal matches will start at 14:00 (07:00 UTC) featuring the bronze medal match, followed by the gold medal match at 15:00 (08:00 UTC).
