Two German pairs each claimed spots in the men’s and women’s main draw tournaments of the 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships in Roi-Et with multiple victories in the qualification round on Tuesday.

German women’s pair Elea Beutel & Clara Dreßen endured and conquered a tough opening day, winning all three match hurdles to secure their spot in the main draw.

After starting with a straight-set win against Singapore, the German duo’s resilience were put to test, as they had to overcome two tiebreakers on Tuesday, including their 2-1 (21-17, 18-21, 15-13) closing victory against compatriots Sophia Neuß & Mareet Maidhoff.

Beutel & Dreßen were down in the final set, but rallied to level the score at 13-13, until a block and an ace sealed their win.

Their male compatriots Tamo Wüst & Tristan Fröbel also moved to the main draw, following their two victories against two Hungarian pairs Boldizsár Borbély/Lukas Niemeier and Domonkos Dóczi/Csanád Frányó.

They started the day with a tight 2-1 (21-19, 17-21, 16-14) win Borbély/Niemeir, before they closed their day with a 2-0 (21-13, 21-16) triumph against Dóczi/ Frányó.

Meanwhile, Austria’s Magdalena Rabitsch & Anja Trailovic, Finland’s Sara Sinisalo & Anniina Muukka and Czechia’ Anna Pavelková and Katerina Pavelková completed the women’s main draw, following their triple victories.

Advancing to the men’s main draw are Brazil’s Eduardo Henrique Barbosa da Silva & Isac Adolfo Farias Barbosa, Ukraine’s Vitalii Savvin & Anton Moiseiev and Latvia’s Toms Liepa & Ernests Puskundzis with double victories on the first day.

The main draw will feature 32 teams per gender and will unfold on Wednesday, November 8. The 32 teams will be playing in eight pools of four teams each in a round-robin system.

The best three ranked teams in each pool will advance to the next phase of the tournament, which will consist of a single elimination phase played until the bronze and gold medal matches on Sunday, November 12.
