Still, they were pushed to overtime in the first set of their sixteenthfinal match before putting together a 2-0 (22-20, 21-12) shutout of Argentina’s Juan Amieva & Maciel Bueno, with a match-high 19 points from Rotar.

Eighth-seeded title holders Perusic & Schweiner, on the other hand, took three sets to overcome the resistance of Marco Grimalt & Esteban Grimalt and celebrate a 2-1 (21-14, 25-27, 15-10) victory. Pedrosa was the best scorer of that match with 19 points.

In a titanic clash between third-seeded Olympic champions Ahman & Hellvig and fifth-seeded Michal Bryl & Bartosz Losiak of Poland, the Swedish jump-setters hammered out a 2-0 (21-18, 21-18) sweep. Hellvig contributed a match-high 21 points, including four blocks and an ace, while Ahman chipped in with another 10, all in swings. Bryl was his team’s leading scorer with 17 points. In the eighthfinals, Ahman & Hellvig will face France’s Remi Bassereau & Calvin Aye, who persevered through a three-set battle with Switzerland’s Yves Haussener & Julian Friedli to earn a 2-1 (21-11, 18-21, 15-9) victory with a match-high 20 points from Aye.
