The Australian fans’ hopes for a first home win at the women’s World Championship were shattered again on Saturday. In the last match of the day, Paul & Kunst disappointed the crowd on the stands at center court with a dramatic 2-1 (21-14, 23-25, 15-6) victory over Clancy & Milutinovic. In a particularly thrilling second set, the lead went back and forth several times. The Aussies came close to leveling the match as they opened a 19-15 lead, but the Germans caught up with four in a row, denied two set points and wasted two match points of their own before conceding the set to the home team. Paul & Kunst, however, completely dominated the tie-breaker to deliver the upset. The two German athletes fired five aces each. 23-year-old Kunst also put up three kill blocks towards a match-high 24 points, while 25-year-old Paul finished with 23 points. 24-year-old Milutinovic led the Australian duo with 19 points, including five blocks and an ace, while 33-year-old Clancy, a three-time Olympian and an Olympic silver medalist at Tokyo 2020, signed off with 13 points.

Already qualified for the sixteenthfinals, on Sunday, Yan & Xia and Paul & Kunst will lock horns for the first place in the pool standings and a better position in the elimination draw.
