Thamela/Victoria (BRA) vs. Lazarenko/Romaniuk (UKR) - Pool A #72551840

Thâmela passes during the pool final against the Ukrainians

FIVB World Ranking leaders Thâmela Coradello and Victoria Lopes confirmed the expectations and topped their pool at the 2025 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship on Monday, but they had to fight really hard for it.

The Brazilians played Ukrainians Tetiana Lazarenko and Daria Romaniuk for the first place in Pool A in Adelaide and earned their third victory in the tournament in dramatic fashion, coming from behind to triumph 2-1 (19-21, 21-15, 16-14).

Both the Brazilians, who finished first with three wins, and the Ukrainians, who were second with two positive results and a negative one, are guaranteed in the tournament's Round of 32.

The third team out of Pool A to continue in the tournament will be known later on Monday, when Paraguayans Michelle Valiente and Giuliana Poletti and Peruvians Claudia Gaona and Lisbeth Allcca meet in the third round. With both teams looking for their first victories, the winners will end up in third place in the pool and will need to wait until the end of the day to know if they also make it to the Round of 32 or if they will need to play in the 'lucky losers' round instead.

Pool B also had duos from Brazil and Ukraine battling for first place and, in that case, the South Americans had a smoother victory, with Olympians Carol Salgado and Rebecca Cavalcanti sweeping Valentyna Davidova and Anhelina Khmil 2-0 (21-17, 21-15).

Joining them in the elimination rounds will be Dutch Mila Konink and Desy Poiesz, who earned their spot with a 2-0 (21-15, 21-12) victory over Egyptians Marwa Abdelhady and Nada Hamdy in their last pool play match.

Two American teams win their pools

Like Brazil, the United States also had two women's teams winning their pools early in the day on Monday. In Pool C, Taryn Brasher and Kristen Nuss, who won bronze in the last edition of the tournament in 2023, emerged in first place thanks to a 2-0 (21-12, 21-15) win over Dutch Emi van Driel and Wies Bekhuis.

The other match of the pool had Czechs Kylie Neuschaeferova and Martina Maixnerova upsetting Brazilians Vitória Rodrigues and Hegeile 'Hegê' Almeida with a 2-0 (21-7, 21-17) victory. The results led to a triple tie among the two European teams and the South Americans, who ended up on the wrong side of it, ranking fourth in the tie-breakers and exiting the tournament in pool play.

Terese Cannon and Megan Kraft had to work harder than their compatriots to win Pool D, as they started behind Germans Sandra Ittlinger and Anna-Lena Grüne in their third match, but came back to take a big 2-1 (20-22, 21-15, 16-14) victory and get the job done.

French Olympians Lézana Placette and Alexia Richard also ended pool play on a high, beating Mozambique's Vanessa Muianga and Mércia Mucheza 2-0 (21-16, 21-17) to confirm their progress to the elimination rounds.

FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships: Match schedule & Results

After the conclusion of pool play later on Monday, 28 teams will be guaranteed in the Round of 32 - the 12 pool winners, the 12 pool runners-up and the four best third-placed teams. The remaining eight third-placed duos will play an elimination match on Tuesday in the 'lucky loser' round, with the four winners completing the Round of 32 lineup in Adelaide.
