Reigning Olympic champions Ana Patricia Ramos & Eduarda Lisboa (Duda) withdrew from the women’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship in Adelaide. The official message from the Brazilian federation cited medical reasons, but did not specify which of the two players will need additional tests to be conducted upon their return to Brazil. Ana Patricia & Duda forfeited their eighthfinal on Thursday and their opponents Julia Donlin & Lexy Denaburg of the United States automatically qualified for the quarterfinals, where they will meet American compatriots Kristen Nuss & Taryn Brasher, who won the big eighthfinal clash with Katja Stam & Raisa Schoon of the Netherlands.

Third-seeded Nuss & Brasher came back from a set down to mount a 2-1 (20-22, 21-19, 15-6) victory over the two-time Dutch Olympians. Brasher topped the match chart with 27 points, including three kill blocks. Nuss chipped in with another 19 points, featuring one kill block and an ace. Stam was her team’s most prolific scorer with 25 points under her belt.

Brazil will be represented by at least one team in the women’s quarterfinals, as top-seeded Thamela Coradello & Victoria Lopes managed to overcome the resistance of Ukraine’s Tetiana Lazarenko & Daria Romaniuk. The world’s number one team won the opening eighthfinal on Thursday by a rollercoaster 2-1 (21-18, 11-21, 15-8). Thamela spearheaded the Brazilian duo with 20 points, including two blocks, while Victoria fired four aces to finish with 14 points. Romaniuk was the best scorer of the match with 22 points.

In the quarterfinals, Thamela & Victoria will be challenged by Valentina Gottardi & Reka Orsi Toth. The ninth-seeded Italians mastered a 2-0 (21-18, 21-14) sweep of their eighthfinal encounter with Germany’s Linda Bock & Louisa Lippmann. Orsi Toth impressed with five aces, to which she added an ace and 12 successful swings to emerge as the best scorer of the game. Gottardi added another 15 points, including four blocks. Lippmann led the German side with 13 points.

Thursday’s women’s eighthfinal round continues with the remaining four duels for quarterfinal berths.
