After two legs of matches, Pool C is wide open with all four participating teams standing on a 1-1 win-loss record ahead of the deciding third leg on Sunday. In Saturday’s last match of that pool, Andre & Renato produced a 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) upset of third-seeded Ahman & Hellvig. Renato contributed a match-high 18 points, including an ace and a kill block. Andre put up three stuffs and finished with 12 points. Also with three kill blocks under his belt, Hellvig tallied a total of 15 points, while Ahman added 14, all in swings.
In Sunday’s crucial games for the final pool standings, Andre & Renato will take on Australia’s Paul Burnett & Thomas Hodges, while Ahman & Hellvig will face another Brazilian pair, George Wanderley & Saymon Barbosa.
Brazilian heavyweights Evandro Oliveira & Arthur Mariano Lanci and Germany’s Paul Henning & Lui Wust secured the top two places in Pool D and, with that, direct tickets to the sixteenthfinals. They will play against each other for the top of the table on Monday, when the two winless teams in the pool – Argentina’s Juan Amieva & Maciel Bueno and Nicaragua’s Ruben Mora & Dany Lopez – will fight for survival in a head-to-head duel for the third place. On Saturday, Evandro & Arthur Lanci put together a solid 2-0 (21-14, 21-14) victory over Amieva & Bueno, and Henning & Wust mastered a 2-0 (21-11, 21-14) sweep of their game against Mora & Lopez.
USA’s Miles Evans & Chase Budinger secured a spot in the elimination rounds and made an important step towards a direct ticket to the sixteenthfinals with their second win in Pool I, a 2-0 (21-16, 21-17) shutout of Australia’s heroes of the first competition day – D'Artagnan Potts & Jack Pearse. The other American team in the pool, Chaim Schalk & James Shaw, was also successful on Saturday. They achieved their first victory in Adelaide, a hard-fought 2-0 (21-18, 24-22) over Ruben Penninga & Matthew Immers of the Netherlands, who now trail bottom of the table with two losses in two matches.
Similarly, in Pool L, Frenchmen Remi Bassereau & Calvin Aye are sure to advance beyond the pool stage of the tournament after securing their second win in Adelaide on Saturday, a convincing 2-0 (21-14, 21-11) over Morocco’s Ilyas Rhouni Lazaar & Soufiane El Gharouti, for whom it was the second loss of the tournament. The other two teams in the pool stand on a 1-1 win-loss record each after Chile’s Marco Grimalt & Esteban Grimalt played their second three-setter in Australia, but this time won it by a narrow 2-1 (21-19, 19-21, 15-13) over home heroes Mark Nicolaidis & Izac Carracher.
Pool J was one of the pools that started on Saturday with its first-leg matches. In the opening game, Switzerland’s Yves Haussener & Julian Friedli came back from a set down against Austria’s Timo Hammarberg & Tim Berger to celebrate a 2-1 (15-21, 21-18, 15-13) victory. Then, Qatari standouts Cherif Younousse & Ahmed Tijan defeated Cuba’s Damian Gomez & Eblis Veranes in straight sets, 2-0 (21-18, 21-14).
Pool K was the last one to get into action, with Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalists Nils Ehlers & Clemens Wickler delivering a 2-0 (21-16, 21-18) shutout of Canada’s Samuel Schachter & Jonathan Pickett, and Argentina’s Tomas Capogrosso & Nicolas Capogrosso hammering out a 2-0 (21-6, 21-18) sweep of their opening game against Mozambique’s Jose Mondlane & Osvaldo Mungoi.
Men’s pool play at Adelaide 2025 will continue on Sunday at 09:00 local time (22:30 UTC on Saturday).
