Fleming & Fejes came back from a set down against Alchin & Johnson to complete a 2-1 (19-21, 21-17, 15-12) turnaround and make it among the best 32 teams of the competition. Fleming and Alchin were on fire from the serving line. The former contributed six aces towards a match-high 24 points, also including three kill blocks, and the latter topped that with eight aces to finish with a total of 22 points. With two aces to her name, Fejes contributed a total of 17 points towards the victory. On Wednesday, Fleming & Fejes will take on second-seeded Brazilians Carol Solberg & Rebecca Cavalcanti in one of the sixteenthfinal matches.

The third Australian pair in the first playoff round – Tara Phillips & Kayla Mears – failed to please the local fans with another home victory. French Olympians Placette & Richard beat them in straight sets, 2-0 (21-12, 21-14), to advance to a sixteenthfinal encounter with the world’s number one team, top-seeded Brazilians Thamela Coradello & Victoria Lopes. Richard put away three aces and two kill blocks to top the match chart with 21 points.

The other French duo in the round of 36 – Clemence Vieira & Aline Chamereau – had to leave the tournament after a 2-0 (21-12, 22-20) loss to Scampoli & Bianchi. Bianchi’s impressive seven aces made a big difference in the match. She emerged as the best scorer with a total of 21 points. On Wednesday, the Italians will meet third-seeded Americans Kristen Nuss & Taryn Brasher in a duel for a spot in the eighthfinals.

Kylie & Maixnerova were the lowest ranked team to push through to the second knockout round. Seeded 46th in the 48-team draw, the Czechs booked their spot among the best 32 of the tournament with a 2-1 (18-21, 21-16, 15-8) comeback win over Paraguayan Olympians Michelle Valiente & Giuliana Poletti Corrales. Maixnerova dominated the game with six aces and a kill block towards a solid match high of 35 points. Next, Kylie & Maixnerova will challenge fourth-seeded Americans Terese Cannon & Megan Kraft in one of the sixteenthfinal fixtures.

The sixteenth final round is already underway in Adelaide, with eight matches on Tuesday and another eight on Wednesday.
