Beach Volleyball World Championships Tlaxcala 2023 - News

George/Andre (BRA) vs. Brouwer/Meeuwsen (NED) - Quarterfinals #7164106

Brouwer and Meeuwsen will play teams from Australia and the Netherlands in their next pool play matches

Ten years after topping the podium in their victorious debut at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, Dutch veterans Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen started another campaign in the tournament, their sixth straight, on the right foot.

Playing in the city of Tlaxcala on Saturday, the Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medalists secured their first win in Pool J with a sweep (21-14, 21-15) of Thais Poravid Taovato and Pithak Tipjan on the second day of matches in Mexico.

Brouwer and Meeuwsen, who were 23 and 25 respectively when they won the World Championships ten years ago, are one of just three men’s teams to have played in the 2013 edition of the tournament to remain together a decade later – Spanish Pablo Herrera and Adrián Gavira and Chilean cousins Marco and Esteban Grimalt are the others.

Their experience and longtime partnership played a factor in their opening match in Mexico as, besides dealing better with the feelings of a debut than their young opponents, the Europeans also managed to find ways to dominate the Asians, who combine for just 30 international events among them.

“We’re happy to start the tournament after a few days of preparation here in Mexico,” Brouwer told Volleyball World. “It’s a great feeling to get another World Championships going and, of course, winning is always nice. I think our experience was a big factor in this first match as we’ve been playing at the highest level for 15 years and our opponents haven’t. But we have some details to work on and to improve during the event.”

Beach Volleyball World Championships - Match Schedule and Results

After their opening-match victory, the Dutch will be back on the court on Sunday to face Australians Mark Nicolaidis and Izac Carracher in their second encounter in the tournament before completing pool play on Monday against compatriots Matthew Immers and Steven van de Velde.

“Our second match against Australia should be tougher as they are stronger opponents,” Brouwer reflected. “We’ll need to improve our level to get a win on the bullring. It’s always nice to see a lot of countries from every continent taking part in the World Championships. That’s the way to grow the sport.”

Since taking gold in Stare Jablonki in 2013, Brouwer and Meeuwsen never got to return to the podium at the World Championships, getting three straight 17th-place finishes before ranking fifth last year in Rome.

The Dutch weren’t the only medal contenders to have a strong debut on Saturday in Mexico as Germans Nils Ehlers also swept (21-7, 21-13) Chileans Noe Aravena and Vicente Droguett in Pool F while Poles Bartosz Łosiak and Michal Bryl took French Remi Bassereau and Julien Lyneel down in two sets (21-18, 21-14) in Pool K.

The opening round of the event will continue until Monday, when the 32 teams that will advance to the elimination rounds will be known. The winners and second-placed teams from each of the 12 pools in each gender will advance to the elimination rounds, as well as the four best-ranked third-placed tandems. The eight remaining third-placed duos will need to play in a lucky loser round, with four of them moving forward.
