The biggest teams will all be in Rome for the World Championships, set to take place from June 10 to 19.
In the men's competition, Poland’s Michal Bryl and Bartosz Losiak lead the list of 48 men’s pairs preparing to compete. They won two Challenge tournaments on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour earlier this season.
Participants will also include reigning Olympic champions Anders Mol and Christian Sorum of Norway and Tokyo 2020 bronze medalists Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan of Qatar. They will be joined by FIVB World Ranking leaders Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot of the Netherlands, their compatriots, 2013 world champions Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen, current Asian champions Christopher McHugh and Paul Burnett of Australia and many more of the world’s top men’s duos. Adrian Carambula and Enrico Rossi will be the highest seeded team to represent hosts Italy.
In the women's competition, World Ranking leaders and this season's most successful team Katja Stam and Raisa Schoon of the Netherlands, are the top-seeded pair. The world’s number two duo, two-time Beach Pro Tour Challenge winners Barbara Seixas and Carol Solberg of Brazil will also be battling for medals at Rome 2022.
The ladies’ line-up for the World Championship features numerous other stars including defending world champions Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Canada. They will be joined by Tokyo 2020 medallists Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho Del Solar of Australia and Joana Heidrich and Anouk Verge-Depre of Switzerland, reigning European champions Tanja Huberli and Nina Brunner, also of Switzerland, and 2021 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Finals winners Karla Borger and Julia Sude, to name a few.
The draw for the pool phase of the World Championships will take place in Jurmala, Latvia at 19:00 local time / 16:00 GMT on May 31, a day before the Beach Pro Tour Elite16 event in Jurmala, which will take place from June 1 to 5. At the conclusion of the draw, 48 teams per gender will be distributed into 12 round-robin pools of four pairs each. The top two teams in each pool and the best four third-placed duos will advance to the elimination rounds. The remaining eight teams ranked third in their pools will play a four-match lucky-loser round to complete the 32 teams in the knockout bracket. The entire tournament will feature 216 matches across 10 days of competition.
Of the 48 berths in each gender, 25 (including two quota places for hosts Italy) were determined on the basis of FIVB entry points. The five continental confederations were also allocated four berths each, accounting for 20 more teams, and three remaining participants were granted wild cards.
Tickets for the event are already on sale and fans can reserve their seats to watch the best teams in the world compete in the Italian capital in June.
This year’s edition of the World Championships will mark the return of the event to the iconic Foro Italico stadium, which also hosted the tournament for the first time back in 2011. The Foro Italico also featured on the beach volleyball calendar in 2019, when it set the stage for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Finals.
