Perusic/Schweiner (CZE) vs. Boermans/de Groot (NED) - Round of 16 #18624155

Boermans & De Groot celebrate their win over the world champions

Stefan Boermans & Yorick de Groot of the Netherlands knocked out the reigning world champions in the second men’s eighthfinal at the Olympic beach volleyball on Sunday afternoon. Then, the world’s number one team David Ahman & Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden also advanced to the quarterfinals after putting a stop to Noslen Diaz & Jorge Alayo’s fantastic run at Paris 2024.

Seventh-seeded Boermans & De Groot mastered a 2-0 (21-18, 21-16) sweep of their match against fifth-seeded Ondrej Perusic & David Schweiner. The Dutch stayed well in control through most of the game and earned a well-deserved victory. They outplayed the Czechs in spiking and in serving, but mostly capitalized on the abundant unforced errors the world champions made. Boermans led his team with 20 points, including three of the pair’s five aces in the match. De Groot scored 12 points, including the match winner. Schweiner showed his blocking skills with four stuffs and finished with 22 points as the top scorer of the match.

“We started pretty decent. We played a very good game at the beginning, but they also did,” Boermans commented after the game. “They took some points here and there and we had to catch up with them, but in the end we kept our heads cool, we played good sideout, and Yorick was able to dig some balls, so we could make the difference. I think the service pressure was also good, so actually - a lot of good things! We are happy with the win.”

“We knew that if we played well we could beat them. In the last four matches they beat us and we’ve been struggling against them, but I think it was quite equal going into this match, so I am happy that we came out as the winners,” De Groot added.

In one of the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Boermans & De Groot will take on third-seeded Germans Nils Ehlers & Clemens Wickler.

“I think our own level of playing is the most important thing, also in the next match. Regardless of whom we play, this was going to be a very difficult match, and so will the next one. But I think the foundation of our game is our sideout, so if that’s in control like this, then we can beat a lot of teams,” De Groot told the FIVB.

“The Germans are also one of the strongest teams out there,” said Boermans. “The last time we played them was actually the first time that we beat them. That was a good feeling for us and we are going to take a lot of that into the next game. But it will be a new game again. They will also have seen the footage from that match and they will adjust to that. I think, if we can deliver the same amount of pressure that we did in the past two matches, the same sideout strategy and the power that we have, then it can come our way and hopefully we’ll take the win, but we’ll see on Wednesday.”

Åhman/Hellvig (SWE) vs. Diaz/Alayo (CUB) - Round of 16 #18624672

Hellvig on the block against Alayo

Top-seeded Ahman & Hellvig had to battle it out through a tough three-set duel with 16th-seeded Cubans Diaz & Alayo to celebrate a hard-earned 2-1 (21-11, 26-28, 15-11) victory and a spot among the quarterfinalists, while handing the opponents their first defeat of the tournament and putting an end to their inspiring Cinderella story.

After a one-sided first set, Diaz & Alayo put up an epic fight in the second, pushing it deep into overtime, inspired by the loud support they were getting from the packed stands, and prompting a tie-breaker. The Swedish jump-setters regained control in the third set and although their opponents from the Caribbean never gave up, the favourites managed to emerge with the victory. After a spectacular dive by Ahman in defence, Hellvig put away the 15-11 match winner. Hellvig excelled with an impressive eight kill blocks and three aces towards a 28-point match high. Ahman added another 20 points towards the victory, while Alayo led the Cuban duo with 26 points.

Ahman & Hellvig’s quarterfinal opponents will emerge from the eighthfinal between Brazil’s Evandro Oliveira & Arthur Mariano and Netherlands’ Steven van de Velde & Matthew Immers, starting at 21:00 local time (19:00 UTC) on Sunday evening.
