USA’s Brook Bauer & Madelyne Anderson, seeded 13th in the women’s main draw at the Haikou Challenge on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour, created the biggest upset in Friday’s pool finals, by shutting out top-seeded Wang Jingzhe & Xia Xinyi of host nation China, winning Pool A and advancing straight to Saturday afternoon’s second elimination round. Two teams that started their Haikou campaigns from the qualifications – France’s Lezana Placette & Alexia Richard and USA’s Molly Shaw & Toni Rodriguez – also won their pools to jump directly into the last 12 of the tournament.

After winning the first set in the overtime, Bauer & Anderson went on to close their match with Wang & Xinyi in straight sets, 2-0 (22-20, 21-16), and are already awaiting their second elimination round opponents, who will emerge from the first knockouts, placing the pool runners-up against the third-placed teams.

21st-seeded Placette & Richard, who started their Haikou quest from the qualifiers, topped Pool D. The French Paris 2024 Olympians produced a 2-0 (21-19, 21-14) victory in the pool winners’ match against 16th-seeded Wang Xinxin & Dong Jie of China and progressed to the round of 12.

Qualifiers Shaw & Toni, seeded 19th, also advanced to the second knockout round after their Pool F final opponents Clemence Vieira & Aline Chamereau of France forfeited the match.

The all-Australian final of Pool E was decided deep into the overtime of the second set in favour of fifth-seeded Taliqua Clancy & Georgia Johnson, who celebrated a 2-0 (21-18, 26-24) win over eighth-seeded qualifiers Stefanie Fejes & Jana Milutinovic.

Second-seeded Xue Chen & Zeng Jinjin of China and third-seeded Niina Ahtiainen & Taru Lahti-Liukkonen of Finland lived up to their status and won the Pool B and Pool C finals against USA’s Hailey Harward & Kylie Kuyava-De Berg by 2-1 (18-21, 21-18, 15-7) and against Japan’s Asami Shiba & Reika Murakami by 2-0 (21-16, 21-16), respectively.

On Saturday morning, starting at 09:00 local time (01:00 UTC), the six pool runners-up, who lost the above-mentioned matches, will line up against the six teams that finished third in the pools by winning their losers’ games on Friday – Poland’s Aleksandra Wachowicz & Julia Radelczuk from Pool A, Austria’s Lena Plesiutschnig & Katharina Schützenhofer from Pool B, Germany’s Anna-Lena Grune & Lea Sophie Kunst from Pool C, New Zealand’s Shaunna Polley & Olivia MacDonald from Pool D, Spain’s Belen Carro & Sofia Gonzalez from Pool E and China’s Yan Xu & Zhou Mingli from Pool D – in elimination duels for the remaining vacancies in the second knockout round.
