Monday’s weekly update of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Rankings brought in changes in the number two spots for both genders. After making the podiums at four consecutive Elite events on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour, Stefan Boermans & Yorick de Groot of the Netherlands climbed back up to the second place in the men’s ranking, overtaking reigning Olympic champions David Ahman & Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden, who skipped last week’s Rio de Janeiro Elite in Brazil. More surprisingly, Rio women’s gold medalists Carol Solberg & Rebecca Cavalcanti of Brazil lost some ground, yielding their number two spot to Terese Cannon & Megan Kraft of the United States.

USA’s Terese Cannon & Megan Kraft celebrate during the Rio Elite bronze medal match
Carol & Rebecca earned 1,200 points with their success in Rio, but netted only 600 of them as their previous eighth best result over the last 365 days of 600 points is no longer in the equation. Meanwhile, Cannon & Kraft, who took 1,000 points for their bronze in Brazil last week, pocketed the whole amount as it was their eighth qualifying tournament within the past year and they did not have to drop any points previously earned. These calculations placed the Americans two spots above the fourth place they held last week (also surpassing Latvia’s Tina Graudina & Anastasija Samoilova) and just 20 points above the Brazilians in the World Ranking, with 7,340 points in total against 7,320.
Another Brazilian duo, Thamela Coradello & Victoria Lopes, who took silver in Rio, stayed in control of the number one spot with a total of 8,320 points.
The pairing of reigning world champion Kelly Cheng with her current partner Molly Shaw finished fourth in Rio and jumped as many as four positions up to number nine. The American duo, who are in their first season together and have now accumulated points from seven qualifying tournaments, are in the top 10 of the World Ranking for the first time along their journey together.
In other changes within the women’s top 10, Germany’s Svenja Muller & Cinja Tillmann overtook Switzerland’s Anouk Verge-Depre & Zoe Verge-Depre into the sixth place, while Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalists Melissa Humana-Paredes & Brandie Wilkerson of Canada overtook reigning Olympic champions Ana Patricia Ramos & Eduarda Santos Lisboa (Duda) of Brazil and USA’s Kristen Nuss & Taryn Brasher into the 10th place.
The top 10 is completed by fifth-ranked Valentina Gottardi & Reka Orsi Toth of Italy and eighth-ranked Dorina Klinger & Ronja Klinger of Austria, who kept their positions from last week.
Meanwhile, USA’s Julia Donlin & Lexy Denaburg, who posted some major upsets in Rio and reached the quarterfinals, jumped six spots up from the number 21 position they held last week and entered the top 15 for the first time.
Boermans & De Groot, who were on top of the men’s World Ranking for short periods in both 2022 and 2024, earned bronze at the Rio de Janeiro Elite, their fourth in a row, and that helped them shift another spot up the chart, to number two. They netted 712 points towards a new total of 7,340 that placed them 100 points above the previous number two, Ahman & Hellvig. Another 1,260 points separate the Dutch pair from top-ranked Anders Mol & Christian Sorum of Norway.
Rio de Janeiro winners Cherif Younousse & Ahmed Tijan, also a former world’s number one team for many weeks in 2021 and 2022, made a leap of five positions up the ranking and caught up with Argentina’s Nicolas Capogrosso & Tomas Capogrosso in fourth place on 6,600 points apiece.
Last week’s runners-up Noslen Diaz & Jorge Alayo of Cuba made an even higher leap of nine positions to number 11, just below Latvia’s Martins Plavins & Kristians Fokerots, who finished fourth in Rio and kept their 10th place in the chart.
The remaining spots in the top 10 are occupied by sixth-ranked Jacob Holting Nilsson & Elmer Andersson of Sweden, seventh-ranked Evandro Oliveira & Arthur Mariano Lanci of Brazil, eighth-ranked Michal Bryl & Bartosz Losiak of Poland and ninth-ranked world champions Ondrej Perusic & David Schweiner of Czechia.
