After claiming the bronze medals at last week’s Hamburg Elite16 on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour, Netherlands’ Stefan Boermans & Yorick de Groot rose back up to number two in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Ranking. They have not been this high in the chart since they were the world’s number one team for three weeks back in May 2022, or 117 weeks ago. Meanwhile, Switzerland’s Tanja Huberli & Nina Brunner, who topped the women’s podium in Hamburg, climbed up to number four for the first time since June 2023.

Before Hamburg, Boermans & De Groot shared the number three position in the chart with George Wanderley & Andre Stein of Brazil, but after net-gaining 280 of the 1,000 points that came with the Elite16 bronze, they also surpassed Olympic silver medallists Nils Ehlers & Clemens Wickler of Germany into the second position on a new total of 7,540 points, or exactly 1,000 points below chart-toppers David Ahman & Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden and 180 points above the Germans.
Former number ones Anders Mol & Christian Sorum of Norway pocketed the full 1,200 points they earned for finishing on top of the podium in Hamburg and that was good enough for returning to the top 10, or nine spots up from where they were a week ago. The Beachvolley Vikings, however, are still two tournaments short of the maximum of eight over the past 12 months that can count towards the World Ranking, which means solid potential for further rise up the chart in the future.
Spanish veterans Pablo Herrera & Adrian Gavira netted 500 points from their Hamburg silver and that resulted in a climb of one position, from number 15 to number 14.
Meanwhile, fourth-placed Samuele Cottafava & Paolo Nicolai of Italy gained 300 points, enough for a three-spot leap from number nine to number six. One of the pairs they jumped over were Steven van de Velde & Matthew Immers of the Netherlands. They were actually the only one of the four fifth-placed teams that did not gain new points towards the ranking and dropped down the chart, from number six to number seven.
Among the other three, Australia’s Mark Nicolaidis & Izac Carracher ascended two spots to number 24, Argentina’s Nicolas Capogrosso & Tomas Capogrosso climbed three spots to number 26 and Brazil’s Adrielson Dos Santos & Arthur Da Silva rocketed as many as 10 spots up to number 30.
Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallists Huberli & Brunner kept 740 of the 1,200 points they earned with their gold in Hamburg and shot six positions up the women’s World Ranking, from number 10 to number four, on a new total of 7,040 points, 200 short of third-ranked Katja Stam & Raisa Schoon of the Netherlands, who netted 160 points from reaching the quarterfinals last week. The Swiss pair is back among the top four in the ranking for the first time in 62 weeks.
Hamburg runners-up Svenja Muller & Cinja Tillmann of Germany shifted one position up to number six, while bronze medallists Thamela Coradello & Victoria Lopes of Brazil, for whom the Hamburg Elite16 was only the second Beach Pro Tour appearance as partners, surged as many as 132 spots to number 90.
Italy’s Valentina Gottardi & Marta Menegatti, who finished fourth last week, gained three spots in the ranking and rose to number eight, while the three fifth-placed duos, other than Stam & Schoon, each shifted one position up the chart – Switzerland’s Joana Mader & Anouk Verge-Depre to number 14, Germany’s Laura Ludwig & Louisa Lippmann to number 18, and Lithuania’s Monika Paulikiene & Aine Raupelyte to number 20.
