Seeded second in the main draw bracket, Gilles Vandecaveye & Louis Vandecaveye hammered out five straight-set wins in Geneva to top the podium and collect their third gold and overall sixth medal on the Beach Pro Tour. In the semifinals, the Belgians put together a 2-0 (24-22, 21-13) shutout of 10th-seeded Tiziano Andreatta & Raoul Acerbi, and went on to master a 2-0 (21-18, 21-12) sweep of the final against another Italian duo – fifth-seeded qualifiers Marco Ulisse & Giacomo Spadoni.
Right on Ulisse’s 25th birthday, he and his partner brought home their first Beach Pro Tour medal. They entered the Geneva Futures from the qualifications and finished the tournament with silver on a 6-2 win-loss record. In their semifinal match, they managed a hard-fought 2-0 (21-18, 22-20) victory over third-seeded Colin Hilbert & Steve Weber of Luxembourg.
Andreatta & Acerbi lost only two matches in Geneva, both to the Vandecaveye. They recovered from their semifinal loss with a 2-0 (21-16, 24-22) win over Hilbert & Weber for the bronze, their first Beach Pro Tour medal together.
28 pairs representing 15 different countries took part in the men’s Geneva Futures.
The next Futures stops on the Beach Pro Tour will be held in Rzeszow, Poland and in Messina, Italy from July 2 to 5.
