All four semifinals and medal matches in the women’s competition featured Dutch against Czech pairs.
The women’s gold they earned in Apeldoorn was the first ever Beach Pro Tour medal for either Leanne van Vegten or her 18-year-old teammate Jill de Groot. They dominated in the home sand and cruised to the top of the podium on a winning streak of five victories in five matches played. In a thrilling semifinal, the 11th-seeded Dutch team overcame the resistance of second-seeded Czechs Magdalena Cerna & Anna Pospisilova to deliver a 2-1 (21-13, 17-21, 19-17) upset deep into the overtime of the tie-breaker. Van Vegten & De Groot went on to celebrate a 2-0 (21-17, 21-18) victory over fourth-seeded Andrea Lorenzova & Mariana Tomasova in the gold medal game.
In the other semifinal, Lorenzova & Tomasova came back from a set down to earn a nail-biting 2-1 (19-21, 30-28, 18-16) win over 10th-seeded Tess Spaansen & Trijntje Veerbeek and secure their first Beach Pro Tour podium as a duo.
20-year-old Spaansen & Veerbeek bounced back with a 2-0 (21-15, 24-22) victory over Cerna & Pospisilova in the third-place playoff and also picked up their first ever Beach Pro Tour medal together.
A Dutch teenager also earned his place on top of the men’s podium in Apeldoorn. 18-year-old Tom Sonneville and his teammate Quinten Groenewold conquered their first Beach Pro Tour gold and third consecutive medal on the Tour. The bracket leaders dropped only a set in five matches played in Apeldoorn. Their victorious quest was crowned with a 2-0 (21-15, 21-18) sweep of the semifinal against eighth-seeded German qualifiers Tristan Frobel & Tamo Wust and a 2-0 (21-19, 21-19) win in the gold medal showdown against fourth-seeded Estonian qualifiers Mart Tiisaar & Dimitriy Korotkov.
The experienced Estonians also achieved their third consecutive podium on the Beach Pro Tour. They now have two silvers and a bronze under their belts. They won six matches in a row on the way from the qualifications to the gold medal showdown in Apeldoorn, including a 2-0 (21-17, 21-13) shutout of 11th-seeded Syver Klungsoyr & Tobias Pedersen of Norway in their semifinal.
Also starting from the qualifications in the Netherlands, Germany’s Frobel & Wust put together a 6-2 win-loss record, enough for the bronze, their second medal on the Tour. They finished their campaign with a 2-0 (21-16, 21-16) sweep of the third-place game against Klungsoyr & Pedersen.
28 women’s and 28 men’s duos representing 24 different countries took part in the Apeldoorn Futures.
The next two Futures stops on the Beach Pro Tour will be held in Wuhan, China and in Cervia, Italy from March 28 to 31.
