Lubos Nemec & Adrian Petruf of Slovakia and Ardis Bedritis & Arturs Rinkevics of Latvia were the only two teams that managed to break the seeding in their opening men’s main draw matches at the Nayarit Challenge on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour in Mexico on Thursday.

Slovakia’s Lubos Nemec & Adrian Petruf, who came into pool play as the top-seeded team of the qualification bracket and were seeded 23rd in the 32-team main draw, produced a 2-0 (21-13, 26-24) upset of 10th-seeded Norwegians Nils Gunnar Ringoen & Even Stray Aas in Pool G. Petruf was on fire with seven kill blocks and three serving aces towards a match-high 21 points. In Friday’s pool winners’ matches, the Slovakian pair will take on seventh-seeded Eylon Elazar & Kevin Cuzmiciov of Israel, who swept their opener against Canada’s Luke de Greeff & Tynan Gannett in straight sets.

Latvia’s Ardis Bedritis & Arturs Rinkevics, seeded 19th, delivered a hard-fought 2-1 (21-15, 15-21, 15-12) upset of 14th-seeded Austrians Julian Horl & Laurenc Grossig in Pool C. Bedritis raised as many as nine kill blocks towards a match-high 23 points to lead his team to a duel with third-seeded Julian Friedli & Jonathan Jordan of Switzerland for the first place in the pool. The Swiss were also pushed to three sets in their game against 30th-seeded American qualifiers Dexter Campbell & Skyler Kaufman, but pulled off a 2-1 (21-16, 17-21, 15-8) victory. Friedli & Jordan finished the match with the exact same scoring records – three aces, one kill block and 16 successful swings each.

The longest match of the day was played in Pool F. It took 11th-seeded Christoph Dressler & Mathias Seiser of Austria an hour and two minutes to cope with the resistance of 22nd-seeded Mexican wild cards Jorman Osuna & Miguel Sarabia and squeeze out a 2-1 (21-15, 18-21, 18-16) victory over the inspired home team. Dressler led the winners with a match-high 28 points, including five aces. The Austrians will now face sixth-seeded Dutchmen Leon Luini & Matthew Immers in the pool final.

All of the other matches were resolved in straight sets in favor of the higher seeded teams. So, bracket leaders Samuele Cottafava & Gianluca Dal Corso of Italy will meet Germany’s Maximilian Just & Lui Wust in the Pool A final, Argentina’s Tomas Capogrosso & Nicolas Capogrosso will be challenged by Austria’s Paul Pascariuc & Alexander Horst in the Pool B winners’ match, Czechia’s Matyas Dzavoronok & Jakub Sepka will lock horns with Germany’s Philipp Huster & Sven Winter in the Pool D showdown, Argentina’s Juan Amieva & Maciel Bueno will take on Germany’s Jonas Sagstetter & Benedikt Sagstetter for the first place in Pool E, and Mexican home favorites Antonio Lares & Carlos Andres Ayala will cross swords with USA’s Timothy Brewster & Logan Webber for the direct ticket to the eighthfinals from Pool H.

Friday’s men’s program in Nayarit will offer the second leg of pool play, both the losers’ and the winners’ matches, as well as the first knockout round, in which the pool runners-up will be challenged by third-placed teams for the remaining eight vacancies in Saturday’s eighthfinals. First whistle will sound at 09:00 local time (15:00 UTC).
