The Nayarit Challenge on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour got underway in Mexico on Wednesday with the men’s qualification matches. Five do-or-die games were played with two pairs from Brazil and one each from Canada, France and USA earning the main draw spots. Another three duos – from Brazil, Latvia and Slovakia – also advanced to the last 32 of the tournament, but without play, receiving byes, based on their seeding in the qualification bracket, while another American team moved on as lucky losers.

The top three seeds in the qualification draw – Slovakia’s Lubos Nemec & Adrian Petruf, Latvia’s Olivers Bulgacs & Markuss Graudins and Brazil’s Mateus Rodrigues (Manaus) & Henrique Camboim – moved straight on to the main draw, without having to play any matches.

An all-Brazilian clash between Gabriel Zuliani & Joao Mares and Vilsomar Brito & Luiz Felipe Bonilha extended to the only three-setter of the qualifiers. Zuliani & Joao Mares celebrated at the end of the tie-breaker, 2-1 (21-13, 17-21, 15-9), to gain passage to the main draw.

Another Brazilian team, Gabriel Dos Reis & Johann Dohmann, claimed a 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) win over Germany’s Eric Stadie & Milan Sievers.

USA’s Dexter Campbell & Skyler Kaufman mastered a 2-0 (21-15, 21-13) sweep of their all-American duel with Adam Roberts & Martin Lorenz. Despite the loss, the latter also progressed to the main draw as lucky losers to fill an additional vacancy.

Canada’s Rouzbeh Rahnavard & Robert Kemp delivered a 2-0 (21-18, 21-17) shutout of Japan’s Ryo Tatsumi & Shiro Furuta.

Keran Duval & Arthur Canet of France also booked a main draw berth with a 2-0 (22-20, 21-16) straight-setter against Christopher Shaffer & Owen Karlenzig of the United States.
