Host nation China swept the women’s podium and took the men’s bronze at the Qingdao Futures on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour, while the men’s gold and silver went to pairs from Brazil and Indonesia. Mateus Rodrigues (Manaus) & Vilsomar Brito, Bintang Akbar & Sofyan Rachman Efendi and Wang Yanwei & Du Hongjun, in that order, lined up from first to third in the men’s final standings, while Cao Shuting & Dong Jie, Yuan Lvwen & Zhu Lingdi, Mushajiang Aheidan & Halaiti Kadeliye did so in the women’s competition.

Brazil’s Manaus made a dream Beach Pro Tour debut, topping the podium alongside Vilso, for whom the Qingdao gold was also a career’s first on the Tour. At the tournament in China, they started from the qualifications and lost only one in eight matches played on the way to the trophy. Seeded 16th in the 16-team main draw, the Brazilian pair produced a 2-0 (21-17, 21-16) sweep of their semifinal against 12th-seeded Australian qualifiers Garang Anyang & Justin Schumann, before mounting a hard-fought 2-1 (19-21, 21-15, 17-15) comeback in the final against Bintang & Sofyan.

In their semifinal, the second-seeded Indonesians put together a 2-0 (21-13, 21-16) upset of top-seeded Wang & Du to secure their second Beach Pro Tour medal, after the Qingshan Futures gold last year.

The home favorites achieved their first Tour podium as a duo by claiming a hard-fought 2-1 (21-16, 19-21, 15-12) victory over Anyang & Schumann in the bronze medal match.

Second-seeded Cao & Dong cruised through the women’s tournament on a streak of five wins in five matches all the way to the top of the podium. They have both medaled on the Tour before, but Qingdao gold was their first medal together. In the semifinals, the Chinese pair overcame the resistance of third-seeded Ren Matsumoto & Non Matsumoto of Japan to celebrate a 2-1 (21-19, 15-21, 15-11) victory. In an all-Chinese final against former partners, they mastered a 2-0 (21-19, 21-14) shutout of 11th-seeded qualifiers Yuan & Zhu.

Both Yuan & Zhu are also multiple Tour medalists, but they collected their first medal as a team by reaching the Qingdao final. Their campaign involved six wins in eight matches played, and peaked with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-10) semifinal win over another Chinese team arriving from the qualifications, 10th-seeded Aheidan & Kadeliye.

Aheidan & Kadeliye recovered with a hard-fought 2-1 (27-25, 16-21, 15-13) upset of Ren & Non for the bronze, Kadeliye’s first Beach Pro Tour medal.
