An absolute home team triumph delighted the Swiss fans at the men’s Geneva Futures last week. Yves Haussener & Julian Friedli, Florian Breer & Luc Fluckiger and Adrian Heidrich & Jonathan Jordan, in that order, lined up on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour podium with gold, silver and bronze.

The top-seeded pairing of Yves Haussener with 18-year-old Julian Friedli lived up to their status of bracket leaders and topped the final standings after an unbeaten streak of five wins in Geneva to collect their second gold and overall fourth medal on the Beach Pro Tour together. They achieved a 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) semifinal win over fourth-seeded Nils Gunnar Ringoen & Even Stray Aas of Norway, followed by a 2-1 (20-22, 21-16, 15-11) comeback victory over Breer & Fluckiger in the all-Swiss final.

12th-seeded Breer & Fluckiger failed to make an upset in the gold medal showdown, but settled for silver, the team’s first Beach Pro Tour medal, after upsetting second-seeded Heidrich & Jordan in their semifinal, also in a comeback from a set down, 2-1 (18-21, 21-17, 15-12).

Heidrich & Jordan, on the other hand, settled for bronze after bouncing back with a tough 2-0 (29-27, 21-15) shutout of Ringoen & Aas in the third-place game. It was the duo’s second Beach Pro Tour medal. Last month, also at home at the Spiez Futures, they triumphed on top of the podium.

28 teams representing 15 different countries took part in the men’s Geneva Futures. The women’s Futures tournament in Geneva is taking place this week, from June 26 to 29.
