Partners on the Beach Pro Tour since 2022, the 26-year-old Jonas and the 24-year-old Benedikt are competing in the main draw of an Elite event for just the second time in their careers this week in Ostrava. In March, they overcame the qualifier in Quintana Roo, but dropped both their pool play matches, finishing in 19th place.

In Ostrava, the Germans have been unstoppable, winning a qualifier match on Wednesday and one pool play match in each of the next two days to claim the top spot in Pool C. After downing the Argentinean Capogrosso brothers Nicolas and Tomas, who are currently in second place in the FIVB World Rankings, on Thursday, the Europeans returned to the sand to get another win on Friday, beating Americans Chaim Schalk and James Shaw 2-0 (21-19, 24-22).

Olympic champions win Pool D

Reigning Olympic champions David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig also finished first in their pool and advanced directly to the Round of 12 in Ostrava. On Friday, the Swedish prevailed over Americans Andy Benesh and Miles Partain in the tie-breaker (16-21, 21-18, 16-14) to take the top spot in Pool D.

FIVB World Ranking leaders Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway also confirmed the expectations about them, dominating Pool A with a two-set (21-12, 21-15) victory over reigning European champions Martins Plavins and Kristians Fokerots of Latvia. Pool B winners were Brazilians Evandro Gonçalves and Arthur Lanci, who took down the home team of Jakub Sepka and Jiri Sedlak in the tie-breaker (15-21, 21-11, 15-13).

Pool E was won by Qatari Olympic medalists Ahmed Tijan and Cherif Younousse, who topped Austrians Christoph Dressler and Philipp Waller 2-1 (21-16, 18-21, 15-12), while Polish Olympians Michal Bryl and Bartosz Łosiak came out on top of Pool F after they upset home favorites and world champions Ondrej Perusic and David Schweiner in straight sets (21-18, 21-16).

World champions overcome the Round of 18

Besides the six pool winners, two other duos secured a spot in the Round of 12 on Friday by winning the first Round of 18 matches of the men’s tournament – Perusic and Schweiner, who downed Dutch Olympians Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot 2-0 (21-15, 21-13), and Plavins and Fokerots, who overcame Portuguese up-and-comers Hugo Campos and João Pedrosa also in two sets (34-32, 21-13).

The four remaining duels will be held on Saturday, having Schalk/Shaw against Czechia's Tadeas Trousil/Matyas Dzavoronok, Dressler/Waller against Austria's Julian Hörl/Moritz Pristauz, Benesh/Partain against France's Rémi Bassereau/Calvin Aye and Sepka/Sedlak against Norway's Hendrik Mol/Mathias Berntsen.
