Perusic/Schweiner (CZE) vs. Åhman/Hellvig (SWE) - Final 3rd Place #55500855

The Beach Volley Vikings celebrate their second victory in Montréal

FIVB World Ranking leaders Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway repeated as winners of the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Montréal Elite on Sunday, triumphing in the 2025 edition of the tournament.

The Beach Volley Vikings, who had topped the podium when the event was first held in the Canadian city in 2023, did it again, and were flanked by second-placed Swedish Jacob Hölting Nilsson and Elmer Anderson and third-placed Czechs Ondřej Perušič and David Schweiner at the Parc Jean-Drapeau.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions had some early struggles against the up-and-coming Hölting Nilsson and Andersson in the gold medal match, but used their experience to settle in the game and overcome the young Swedish in two sets (21-19, 21-13) and get to celebrate in front of the Canadian fans again after two years.

“They are such a strong team and Swedish beach volleyball has a bright future,” Sørum reacted. “Playing them today in the final, we had to bring our best game. The future is starting to look dangerous for us with all Sweden has been doing, so we need to step up.”

The victory in Canada was the second of the Norwegians on the Beach Pro Tour in the 2025 season and comes four months after the first one, which happened in Saquarema, in April – Mol and Sørum also won the European Championship for a record fifth time two weeks ago. It was also their fourth medal in five Elite events this year, joining silver in Ostrava and bronze in Brasília.

“Moments like these are really what we live for,” Mol reflected. “This is why we play the sport, and we love it so much. The fans brought an amazing atmosphere, and it was an honor to play in front of them.”

The silver won in Montréal also meant a lot for the 20-year-old Hölting Nilsson and the 19-year-old Andersson, who continue in great form on the Beach Pro Tour, having won four medals in the last five tournaments – they won gold at the Malmö Futures and the Baden Challenge and silver at the Gstaad and the Montréal Elites.

World champions return to the podium

In the bronze medal match, world champions Perušič and Schweiner secured a major three-set (14-21, 22-20, 20-18) victory over reigning Olympic champions David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig to return to the podium on the Beach Pro Tour after finishing 13th in their most recent event, the Gstaad Elite, in July.

“They are one of the top teams in the world for a reason,” Schweiner reflected. “Every time we play the Swedish, I need to jump five teams in each rally, it’s super annoying. The first set didn’t go as we imagined, but we kept fighting until the end, and it worked.”

The podium appearance in Montréal has added to what has been a productive season for the Czechs, who returned home with medals in four of the six tournaments they played, taking gold at the Yucatán and Alanya Challenge events and claiming bronze in the Ostrava and Montréal Elites.

From Canada, the Beach Pro Tour heads back to Europe later this month as the next Elite event of the 2025 season will be held in Hamburg, Germany, from August 27-31.
