In the most interesting match of the first leg of pool play in the women’s main draw at the Joao Pessoa Elite on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour on Thursday, Czechia’s Marketa Svozilova & Marie-Sara Stochlova pushed one of the Brazilian home favorite duos – Carol Solberg & Rebecca Cavalcanti – to the overtime of a deciding third set, but stopped short of upsetting the world’s number two team. The only upset of the day occurred in the match between Vitoria Rodrigues & Hegeile Almeida and French Olympians Clemence Vieira & Aline Chamereau, in which the lower-seeded Brazilians celebrated victory.

Seeded 14th in the main draw, Svozilova & Stochlova came back from a set down in their Pool B opening game against 11th-seeded Carol & Rebecca to level the match and prompt a tie-breaker. The Czechs even reached a double match point, but the mighty Brazilians held up to win in the overtime – 2-1 (21-14, 18-21, 17-15). Carol was the best scorer of the match with 21 points, including two aces and two kill blocks.
On Friday, Carol & Barbara will take on second-seeded Americans Kristen Nuss & Taryn Brasher for the first place in the pool and a direct ticket to the second elimination round. In their opening game, Nuss & Brasher mastered a 2-0 (21-14, 21-13) victory over Brazilian qualifiers Verena Figueira de Oliveira & Kyce Mikaele Martins Silva. Verena & Kyce will meet Svozilova & Stochlova in the match for survival in the competition.
In Pool C, 15th-seeded Victoria & Hegeile achieved the only upset in the first leg of women’s pool play. The home duo achieved a convincing 2-0 (21-18, 21-11) win over 10th-seeded Vieira & Chamereau of France, with a match-high 19 points from Hegeile, including six kill blocks and two aces. The Brazilian pair will challenge third-seeded Latvians Tina Graudina & Anastasija Samoilova in the pool winners’ match. Tina & Anastasija were forced to a tie-breaker by another Brazilian team – qualifiers Carol Horta & Elize Maia – but won it by a landslide, 2-1 (21-18, 14-21, 15-4).
The only other match that required a tie-breaker resolution on Thursday, was the Pool A meeting between Spain’s Daniela Alvarez & Tania Moreno, seeded 12th, and USA’s Julia Donlin & Lexy Denaburg, seeded 13th. The Spanish Olympians came out victorious with a 2-1 (21-14, 17-21, 15-10) win. In the other Pool A fixture, the world’s number one team and top seeds in Joao Pessoa Thamela Coradello & Victoria Lopes of Brazil hammered out a 2-0 (21-13, 21-13) shutout of compatriots Flavia Moura Santos Cezar & Barbara De Sousa Alves Ferreira.
Reigning Olympic champions Ana Patricia Ramos & Eduarda Santos Lisboa (Duda), seeded fourth, pleased the home fans with a 2-0 (21-13, 21-19) sweep of their opening game against American qualifiers Hailey Harward & Molly Phillips. Meanwhile, another US pairing, that of reigning world champion Kelly Cheng with Molly Shaw, won the other first-leg game in this pool - 2-0 (21-16, 23-21) over Paraguayan Olympians Giuliana Poletti Corrales & Michelle Valiente.
A mighty clash between Switzerland’s Anouk Verge-Depre & Zoe Verge-Depre and USA’s Terese Cannon & Megan Kraft will determine the Pool E winners on Friday. On Thursday, the fifth-seeded Swiss sisters outlasted Brazilian qualifiers Thainara Mylena Feitosa de Oliveira & Talita Calixto Simonetti in a 2-0 (21-16, 22-20) battle, while the Americans put together a 2-0 (21-11, 22-20) victory over compatriots Corinne Quiggle & Chloe Loreen, who also emerged from the qualifiers.
Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalists Melissa Humana-Paredes & Brandie Wilkerson of Canada had a good start in Pool F. The sixth-seeded duo claimed a 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) win over French qualifiers Lezana Placette & Alexia Richard, who also competed at the Olympics. Another Paris 2024 participant that arose from the Joao Pessoa qualifiers, Lithuania’s Monika Paulikiene & Aine Raupelyte, tried to upset experienced Brazilians Talita Antunes & Taiana Lima, seeded seventh, but only managed to lose by the narrowest of margins in both sets, 2-0 (21-19, 21-19).
Friday’s women’s program will feature the second leg of pool action and the first knockout round. Action is set to serve off at 09:00 local time (12:00 UTC).
