Brazilian Olympians Evandro Gonçalves and Arthur Lanci had to fight hard for it, but managed to earn a spot in the Round of 12 of this week’s Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite event held in Hamburg on Friday.

The South Americans were among the six men's teams that survived the first elimination matches in the tournament held at the Am Rothenbaum Stadium, overcoming the Round of 18 and continuing in contention for medals in Germany.

After finishing second in Pool D with a win and a loss, the Brazilians played their third tie-breaker in as many days and got the better of Swiss Adrian Heidrich and Jonathan Jordan, winning 2-1 (20-22, 21-18, 17-15). They will now face Dutch Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot, who advanced directly to the Round of 12 as the top team in Pool B.

The German Sagstetter brothers Jonas and Benedikt were another team to have a dramatic Round of 18 victory, prevailing over the Argentinean Capogrosso brothers Nicolas and Tomas in three sets (13-21, 21-15, 16-14). They will now face compatriots Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler, who ranked first in Pool F.

Polish Olympians Michal Bryl and Bartosz Łosiak also had to play three sets to secure their spot in the Round of 12, overcoming Austrians Christoph Dressler and Philipp Waller in the tie-breaker (21-19, 15-21, 15-9). Their next opponents will be Pool A winners Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway.

World champions Ondřej Perušič and David Schweiner moved forward with a two-set (21-18, 21-17), defeating Italians Gianluca Dal Corso and Marco Viscovich. The Czechs will now face Swedish Jacob Hölting Nilsson and Elmer Andersson, who emerged as the top team in Pool D.

French Arnaud Gauthier-Rat and Téo Rotar also secured their spot quickly, handling Germans Paul Henning and Lui Wüst in two sets (21-10, 21-15). The French are now set to play against reigning Olympic champions David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden, who were off on Friday after winning Pool C.

The sixth and last spot in play in the Round of 12 went to Latvians Martins Plavins and Kristians Fokerots, who advanced after claiming a straight-set (21-16, 21-17) victory against the English Bello twins Javier and Joaquin. The 2024 European champions will now meet Cuban Olympians Jorge Alayo and Noslen Díaz, who formed the top team in Pool E.

Beach Pro Tour Hamburg Elite – Match Schedule & Results

On Saturday, both the Round of 12 and the quarterfinals will be held in Hamburg. The four teams that end the day still alive will compete in the semifinals and medal matches on Sunday.
