Guto and Vitor high five after a point

After three frustrated attempts, Brazilians Gustavo ‘Guto’ Carvalhaes and Vitor Felipe managed to overcome the qualifier of a Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour event in the 2025 season for the first time on Wednesday, in Warmia Mazury.

The South Americans were among the eight men’s teams that ended the first day of matches at Anders Hotel Beach undefeated and will now take part in the main draw of the Polish event – eight female duos also advanced.

A new team in the 2025 season, Guto, 31, and Vitor, 34, failed to make it to the main draw in the Elite events held in Quintana Roo, Mexico, and Saquarema and Brasília, Brazil, between March and April, when they couldn’t even win a qualifier match.

Things started to change for the Brazilians, who were partners for the first time back in 2018, this week in Poland, where they earned the right to compete in the main draw with a pair of victories.

Guto and Vitor started their campaign in Warmia Mazury with a three-set (17-21, 21-17, 15-9) victory over Lithuanians Robert Juchnevic and Artur Vasiljev in the first round of the qualifier, and then swept (21-18, 21-19) the Norwegian Mol brothers Markus and Adrian to advance.

In the main draw, they will be part of Pool D, alongside fellow Brazilians Pedro Oliveira and Renato Lima, French Rémi Bassereau and Calvin Aye and Swiss Marco Krattiger and Leo Dillier - their first match will be against their compatriots.

The other seven men’s teams to overcome the qualifier in Poland were USA’s Miles Evans/Chase Budinger, Israel’s Eylon Elazar/Kevin Cuzmiciov, Brazil’s George Wanderley/Saymon Barbosa, Italy’s Manuel Alfieri/Alex Ranghieri, Australia’s Paul Burnett/Luke Ryan, Czechia’s Jakub Sepka/Jiri Sedlak and Ukraine’s Ivan Datsiuk/Oleksii Bublyk.

Australians succeed

On the women’s side, the highlight of the first day of matches in Poland was the qualification of both Australian duos who entered the event. Tokyo Olympic medalist Taliqua Clancy and partner Jana Milutinovic had the shortest path to the main draw, advancing after they topped Czechs Martina Maixnerova and Kylie Neuschaeferova in the tie-breaker (21-23, 24-22, 16-14).

Jasmine Fleming and Stefanie Fejes had to play twice to advance as they had a pair of matches in the qualifier, beating Canadians Adriel Goodman and Myriam Robitaille 2-0 (21-14, 21-8) in the first round and Spanish Paula Soria and Maria Carro by forfeit after they had triumphed in the first set later.

Also making it to the main draw in Warmia Mazury are Ukraine’s Valentyna Davidova/Anhelina Khmil, New Zeland’s Shaunna Polley/Olivia MacDonald, Czechia’s Katerina Pavelková/Anna Pavelková, Lithuania’s Daniele Kvedaraite/Jekaterina Kovalskaja, Japan’s Asami Shiba/Reika Murakami and Poland’s Julia Radelczuk/Natalia Okla.
