Eight other men’s teams also continue alive, but will need to play in the Round of 12, with the following matchups – Spain’s Pablo Herrera/Adrián Gavira vs. Austria’s Tim Berger/Timo Hammarberg, the Netherlands’ Matthew Immers/Steven van de Velde vs. Germany’s Nils Ehlers/Clemens Wickler, Brazil’s Evandro Gonçalves/Arthur Lanci vs. Brazil’s Arthur Mariano/Adrielson dos Santos and Australia’s Mark Nicolaidis/Izac Carracher vs. Germany’s Paul Henning/Maximilian Just.
After getting victories in their first two matches, Boermans and De Groot were faced with compatriots and fellow Olympians Immers and Van de Velde, who were also undefeated. The match went to three sets, but they were better in the end to secure a 2-1 (21-13, 14-21, 15-12) victory and finish first in the pool with six points.
Before the meeting, the two Dutch teams had won their first matches on Friday, with Boermans and De Groot downing the home team of Henning and Just 2-0 (25-23, 21-18) and Immers and Van de Velde beating Portuguese Hugo Campos and João Pedrosa also 2-0 (21-14, 21-18).
