At a glamorous ceremony organised by the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports, held at the CC Amfi in Hamar over the weekend, the annual Idrettsgallaen (Sports Gala) awards were presented to honour the most successful athletes and the best achievements in Norwegian sport in 2022.
Mol and Sorum were the first Norwegian team to win the Beach Volleyball World Championships last year. They claimed the world title in Rome in June. Their 2022 achievements also included three Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite16 gold medals in Ostrava, Paris and Cape Town, and two bronze medals, at the Rosarito and Uberlandia Elite16 events. The Beachvolley Vikings also claimed bronze at the 2022 CEV European Championship in Munich.
After their triumph in Paris in early October, Mol and Sorum regained the number one spot in the FIVB World Ranking, which they have occupied ever since.
“This was a lot of fun. Many thanks to the jury who voted for us!” Sorum said in his acceptance speech. “The year has been fantastic. We managed to take the World Championship gold, which was the last trophy we were missing. That was also the reason we started playing beach volleyball.”
It was the second consecutive year Mol and Sorum earned the Team of the Year award in Norway. Last year they received the honour after winning Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020 and the last edition of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Finals in Cagliari.
Mol and Sorum are set to compete at the upcoming Beach Pro Tour 2022 Finals in Doha from January 26 through 29.
