Bronze medallists in Sochi and Cagliari in 2021, Dutch pair Steven van de Velde and Christiaan Varenhorst started playing together in 2019 and finished third at their third event together, in Itapema. Varenhorst, 31, participated in the Rio 2016 Olympic beach volleyball tournament alongside Reinder Nummerdor after the pair finished second at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in the Netherlands in 2015. His partner, van de Velde, is 27. Before switching to play with Varenhorst, van de Velde played with several other players including Dirk Boehle in 2017-18, when they won bronze in Aalsmeer.
