Netherlands (NED) vs. China (CHN) women - Pool 3 - Preliminary Phase #16218547

The Netherlands were the first women’s national team to announce the composition of their roster for the upcoming 2025 international season, as head coach Felix Koslowski picked 29 players to represent the country this year.

Currently in ninth place in the FIVB World Ranking, the Dutch will have the Volleyball Nations League and the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship as the most important tournaments in their schedule this season.

All but two of the 13 players who represented the Netherlands in their return to the Olympics last year, in Paris, where they finished tenth, will be back with the team this season, including star setter Britt Bongaerts and team captain and outside hitter Nika Daalderop.

According to Koslowski, despite the return of the majority of the players, the focus in 2025 is to give the country’s most promising young athletes an opportunity to show they deserve a spot on the team.

“This is the starting point for us to build a team for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics,” the German coach said. “The biggest goal for us this summer is to involve the younger players and get to spend more time with them. I’m looking forward to it.”

Lohuis takes the year off

The two players who were in Paris and won’t be a part of the Dutch squad in 2025 are outside hitter Anne Buijs and middle blocker Jüliet Lohuis. While the former captain announced her international retirement still in 2024, the 28-year-old Lohuis will be just temporarily absent as she expressed her desire to take a year off from the national team.

“We discussed it last November and then again in January,” Koslowski explained. “I can understand her reasons and if she needs a break, this is the year to do it. It will also give others more opportunities to play.”

Another omission on the list was 29-year-old outside hitter Fleur Savelkoel, who underwent knee surgery in January and will be given more time to properly recover.

First VNL matches

The first tournament of the season for the Dutch, the Volleyball Nations League will start for them in Ottawa, Canada, where they will face Japan, the home team, the Dominican Republic and Bulgaria from June 4-8.

In the World Championship, the Dutch are part of Pool A alongside hosts Thailand, Sweden and Egypt.
