Former USA men’s national team libero Erik Sullivan was picked to replace the legendary Karch Kiraly at the helm of the country’s women’s national team, USA Volleyball announced on Monday.

The position was available since October, when Kiraly departed from the women’s team after 15 years to coach the men, and the American national federation decided to give the 52-year-old Sullivan his first opportunity to coach at the international level.

“With the national team season set to begin in less than six months, we knew we had to move quickly but thoughtfully,” said John Speraw, President and CEO of USA Volleyball. “It was critical that we made the right decision, but we also had to act expeditiously to give the new coach enough time to get to know the team, develop a game plan, and integrate seamlessly into the program. The role of national team head coach is unlike any other coaching position. It’s not about recruiting or fundraising—it’s about elite-level strategy, understanding the nuances of international competition, and managing a high-performance environment. We needed someone who could hit the ground running and bring that specific expertise, and Erik was the clear choice.”

Sullivan’s experience at the international level comes mostly from his playing career as he was part of the American national team from 1998 to 2004, representing the country at both the Sydney 2000 and the Athens 2004 Olympics. Sullivan also played for club teams in Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands and Russia.

Since his retirement and subsequent move to coaching, Sullivan has worked almost exclusively at the collegiate level, having stints as an assistant with the Colorado University, Nebraska and the University of Texas, where he spent the last 14 years and helped the program win three national titles.

Sullivan has also been involved with USA Volleyball in many different capacities over the last 15 years as he was the team leader for the country’s men’s national team in the last three Olympics, was part of the National Team Development Program Scouting Network and coached the country’s national team at the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Women's U20 World Championship.

“I’m honored and excited to take on this new responsibility as head coach of the U.S. women’s national team,” said Sullivan. “Karch Kiraly has left an incredible legacy, and I’m committed to continuing the work he has done with this amazing team. My goal is to build on a strong foundation and create an environment where our athletes can develop to their fullest potential while competing at the highest level. I look forward to working alongside this talented group of athletes as we prepare for the challenges ahead.”

During his collegiate coaching career, Sullivan has worked with many current and past USA women’s national team players, such as Jordan Larson, Molly McCage, Chiaka Ogbogu, Brionne Butler and Madisen Skinner.

“I’m thrilled that Erik Sullivan will be the next head coach of the U.S. women’s national team,” Ogbogu added. “The team will continue its tradition of being led by a world-class coach, and Erik’s experience as an Olympian will be invaluable. The volleyball knowledge I gained from him continues to shape my game, but the leadership lessons he taught me—about upholding a gold-medal standard—are what I’m most grateful for.”

In 2025, his first year with the team, Sullivan will lead the Americans in the Volleyball Nations League, which goes from June 4-August 3, and the FIVB World Championship, which will be held in Thailand, from August 22-September 7.
