Kamil Rychlicki, Simone Anzani and Alessandro Michieletto were Italy's top scorers against Slovenia

Reigning world champions Italy withstood the pressure of over 8,000 fans and delivered a strong performance at the Arena Stožice on Saturday to take down hosts Slovenia and secure a spot in the Volleyball Nations League 2025 Finals.

Playing with authority, the Italians topped the Slovenians 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-23) in Ljubljana and confirmed their presence in the decisive stage of the seventh edition of the tournament, which is going to be held in Ningbo, China, from July 30 – August 3. France and Poland also ended the day qualified.

The victory against the Slovenians helped the Italians get to nine wins and 25 points in the VNL standings. Currently in second place, they can no longer catch leaders Brazil (ten wins, 29 points), but are one win and two points above third-placed France (eight wins, 23 points). Ranked fourth with seven wins and 21 points, Poland can no longer be reached by the teams outside the qualification zone and are also guaranteed a place in the Finals.

With Brazil and hosts China already qualified as well, three spots are still up for grabs and will be assigned on Sunday, the last day of matches in the Preliminary Phase. Japan (seven wins, 20 points), Cuba (six wins, 19 points), Ukraine (six wins, 18 points), Bulgaria (six wins, 17 points), USA (six wins, 17 points), Slovenia (six wins, 17 points), Germany (five wins, 17 points) and Iran (five wins, 16 points) are all candidates to take them.

Opposite Kamil Rychlicki, with 13 points (eight kills, four aces, one block), outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto, with 12 (ten kills, one ace, one block), and middle blocker Simone Anzani, with ten (six blocks, four kills), were key players in the Italian victory on Saturday.

“It’s amazing,” said middle blocker Gianluca Galassi. “Being in the Finals is something we wanted very much and worked for. We’re happy about this and ready for the last match on Sunday. After that, we’ll try to prepare as well as we can for the Finals in China.”

Slovenia had only outside hitter Rok Možič getting to double digits in scoring, with ten points (seven kills, two aces, one block).

Earlier on Saturday, Serbia topped Canada 3-1 (15-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-22) in Ljubljana and confirmed their permanence in the VNL in 2026.

Three matches will be played in the Slovenian capital on Sunday, with Ukraine facing Canada at 13:00 local time (11:00 GMT), the Netherlands playing Italy at 16:30 (14:30 GMT) and the home team meeting Serbia at 20:30 (18:30 GMT).

France sweep Iran and qualify

In Gdańsk, France took Iran down 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 26-24) to confirm the team’s presence in the Finals, where they will try to defend the VNL title they won in 2024.

Opposite Théo Faure scored 20 points for the third time in as many matches this week, getting 17 kills and three aces, and led the French victory. Outside hitter Trévor Clévenot came next with 14 (ten kills, two blocks, two aces).

Morteza Sharifi led the Iranian offense with 16 points (12 kills, three aces, one block), while fellow outside hitter Amirhossein Esfandiar tallied 11, with nine kills and two blocks.

Before the duel between French and Iranians, Bulgaria pulled a major upset at the Ergo Arena, beating hosts Poland 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 25-23, 27-29, 15-11) to continue alive in the VNL.

Volleyball Nations League 2025: full schedule and results

On Sunday, the decisive duels in the Polish city will have China against Cuba at 13:30 local time (11:30 GMT), Bulgaria against Iran at 17:00 (15:00 GMT) and the Olympic gold medal match rematch involving France and Poland at 20:30 (18:30 GMT).
