Brazil (BRA) vs. Argentina (ARG) - Pool 2 - Preliminary Phase #107345693

Brazil celebrate their reverse sweep of Argentina

The first competition week of the men’s 2026 Volleyball Nations League offered plenty of surprises with defending VNL champions Poland, reigning Olympic champions France and reigning world champions Italy all suffering some upsets. Poland even gave up to Italy their number one spot in the FIVB World Ranking that the central Europeans had been holding for several years. Meanwhile, just like in the women’s VNL the week before, Brazil and Japan were the only two teams that managed to go through this week unbeaten and lead the current VNL standings on a 4-0 win-loss record and 11 points each, separated on point ratios.

Playing at home in the capital Brasilia, last year’s bronze medalists Brazil put together three-point victories over Iran, Belgium and Serbia, and finished their first week off with a spectacular reverse sweep of their game against South American archrivals Argentina. The point earned against Brazil was Argentina’s only point of the week. They take the penultimate 17th place on a 0-4 win-loss record.

In the same pool in Brasilia, VNL newcomers Belgium showed some teeth. To the big upset of World Championship silver medalists Bulgaria in their historic opening match, the Belgians added a win over Iran and stand among the top 10 at the end of the week, just below Bulgaria, the youngest team of VNL 2026, who also lost to Serbia and are in ninth place on 2-2. Their southern European neighbors Serbia, on the other hand, managed to win three matches and occupy fifth place in the table. Iran’s only win, over Argentina, places them 15th.

Meanwhile, playing in the pool in Linyi, Japan started off with a shutout of Ukraine, followed up with a five-set upset of Poland and added two four-set victories to win the Asian classic against hosts China and to hand last year’s semifinalists Slovenia their first defeat of the season.

Until then, Slovenia had achieved three tie-breaker wins over China, Poland and Cuba, and now stand sixth on 3-1, just above Poland and Ukraine, seventh and eighth on 2-2 each. In the match against Poland, Slovenia’s 21-year-old talent Nik Mujanovic erupted with 37 points. Only Dutch opposite Nimir Abdel-Aziz has ever scored more points in a single VNL match.

Poland also played three five-setters in China, but won only the last one against Ukraine. On the last day in Linyi, the home team celebrated their first win in VNL 2026, a straight-setter against Cuba to climb to 14th place and leave the Cubans bottom of the table with just one point in four matches.

Three-time VNL runners-up USA and last year’s silver medalists Italy were the best teams in the pool played in Ottawa. The Italians started off with a five-set loss to Olympic champions France, but then delivered three consecutive wins, including a tie-breaker victory over USA on Sunday. They handed the Americans their first loss of the season, but stopped just short of overtaking them in the table. On 3-1 each, USA and Italy are third and fourth in the table, separated slightly on point ratios. In one of the most interesting matches in the Canadian capital, the United States came back from two sets down to defeat the home team in the tie-breaker.

After beating the world champions, France suffered three defeats in a row, at the hands of Canada, Turkiye and Germany, positioning themselves third from the bottom, in 16th place on 1-3 and 2 points. Also on 1-3, but with 6 points, Canada occupy 13th place, just below 11th-placed Turkiye and 12th-placed Germany, on 2-2 each.

The switch between Italy and Poland at the top end of the World Ranking was, of course the most important change in the chart during the first week of VNL. Among the other noteworthy movements, France plummeted from number four to number seven, with USA taking their place, while Japan climbed two positions to number five. Argentina also lost a lot of ground, dropping from number eight to number 13, Germany ascended from number 11 to number eight, while Serbia made an even bigger upward leap, from number 13 to number nine, pushing Bulgaria down to 10.

Bulgarian point-making machine – 22-year-old outside hitter Aleksandar Nikolov – topped the best scorers ranking at the end of the first VNL week. He piled up a total of 96 points, followed by Mujanovic with 89, and another young star of international volleyball – Belgium’s 22-year-old opposite Ferre Reggers – with 77. Canada’s Jackson Howe shined as the best blocker of the week with 16 stuffs to his name, while Ukraine’s Dmytro Yanchuk excelled from the serving line with a total of 13 aces.

Japan’s star opposite Yuji Nishida hit not one, but two big milestones during the four-set win over Slovenia on Sunday. He reached both the 1000-point and the 100-ace marks in the VNL.

The second competition week in the men’s VNL will offer another 36 matches, split among Gliwice in Poland (Argentina, Belgium, China, Germany, Poland and Turkiye), Ljubljana in Slovenia (Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Italy, Slovenia and Ukraine) and Orleans in France (Cuba, France, Iran, Japan, Serbia and USA) from June 24 to 28.
