The field of contenders to win the title of the 2024-2025 Polish Women’s Tauron Liga was narrowed from 12 to eight teams and it will continue to go down with the start of the playoffs on Thursday.

The quarterfinal round will reunite the eight best teams of the regular season, which will meet in four best-of-three series that will be held until the end of the month, determining the semifinalists.

The first round of the quarterfinals starts on Thursday, with two matches - ŁKS Commercecon Łódź vs. ITA TOOLS STAL Mielec, at 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT), and BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała vs. MOYA Radomka Radom, at 20:30 (19:30 GMT). PGE Grot Budowlani Łódź and Metalkas Pałac Bydgoszcz will meet on Friday, at 17:30 (16:30 GMT), with KS DevelopRes Rzeszów and LOTTO Chemik Police completing the schedule on Saturday at 12:30 (11:30 GMT).

DevelopRes vs. Chemik

The best team in the regular season with 56 points (20 wins, two losses), DevelopRes will try to win the national title for the first time after losing in the Finals of the last five editions. This year, they triumphed in the Polish Cup.

The team’s captain and its leading scorer with 308 points, outside hitter Monika Fedusio is a central figure in DevelopRes’ playing system. Polish national team middle blocker Agnieszka Korneluk is another key piece for them and she ranks third in blocks in the league with 67.

DevelopRes Chemik

The reigning Polish champions, Chemik have triumphed 11 times in the Tauron Liga and topped the podium in nine of the last 11 editions. They advanced to the playoffs in eighth place after collecting 24 points in the regular season, with eight wins and 14 losses.

The league’s best blocker with 90 stops and its fourth-best server with 23 aces, middle blocker Dominika Pierzchała is having an outstanding season. With 308 points scored, veteran outside hitter Martyna Grajber-Nowakowska is their leading scorer.

The two sides have met 38 times over the years in the Polish League, with many of these encounters happening in the Finals over the last five years, and Chemik triumphed on 24 occasions. DevelopRes won both matches the teams played this season, though, including the one of last Tuesday, in the final leg of the regular season.

Commercecon vs. Mielec

Commercecon had the lead of the Polish League until the last leg, but was passed by DevelopRes and ended up in second place, with 55 points (18 wins, four losses). They won the league title three times already and want to return to the top of the podium after two years.

Ukrainian opposite Anastazja Hryshchuk was the team’s leading scorer in the regular season with 309 points, a mark good enough to have her in fifth place in the entire league. The team also has two players ranked within the top five in serve-receive – libero Maria Stenzel, who’s third with 53.96% efficiency, and outside hitter Zuzanna Górecka, who appears in fourth place with 52.49%.

Commercecon Mielec

Mielec were the last team to secure their spot in the playoffs, just a few days before the end of the regular season, and advanced in seventh place with 26 points (eight wins, 14 losses). It will be their first playoff appearance since 2010-2011 and the team will try to win gold for the first time.

They had the top scorer of the regular season, opposite Oliwia Sieradzka, who registered 396 points across 21 matches. Up-and-coming middle blocker Agata Milewska also appeared well for the team, registering 64 blocks and 14 aces in her total of 154 points.

The teams only crossed paths in the Polish League in the last two seasons and Commercecon won all four duels held up to now, dropping sets just once.

Budowlani vs. Pałac

Budowlani made it to the playoffs in third place with a campaign of 18 wins and four losses, which earned them 52 points. They made it to the semifinals in the last three seasons, but will be looking for their first Polish title.

Leading the team in its quarterfinal series will be star Italian opposite Terry Enweonwu, who ended the regular season with 257 points, libero Justyna Łysiak, who leads the league in serve-receive with 54,43%, and setter Alicja Grabka, who has been lethal from the service line with the league’s third-best mark of 24 aces.

Pałac won the Polish League back in 1992-1993 and are back in the playoffs after missing it out last season. They had the sixth-best campaign in the regular season, ending with 28 points after they secured ten wins and 12 losses.

Ukrainian middle blocker Svitlana Dorsman, who tallied 284 points, and outside hitter Pola Nowakowska, who registered 268, were the team’s top scorers in the regular season.

Friday’s duel will be the 39th between the teams in the Polish League and Budowlani have considerable advantage, having emerged victorious on 30 occasions – Pałac triumphed in their most recent meeting, though, in the second round of the regular season.

Bielsko-Biała vs. Radomka

Reigning Polish Supercup champions Bielsko-Biała ended the regular season in fourth-place, with 47 points accumulated (17 wins, five losses). The eight-time national champions have made it to the playoffs in the last 25 seasons and want to return to the top of the podium after 15 years.

Outside hitter Julita Piasecka was the fourth-best scorer of the Tauron Liga regular season with 336 points registered, while setter Julia Nowicka led the league in aces with 28 and middle blocker Joanna Pacak ranked second in blocks with 70.

Bielsko-Biala Radomka

Their opponents Radomka had the fifth-best campaign, with 30 points (ten wins, 12 losses). They made it to the playoffs on six occasions and even appeared in the semifinals in 2020-2021, but are still looking for their first medals.

The team counted on Argentinean setter Victoria Mayer to produce a solid campaign in the regular season and has the firepower of star opposite Monika Gałkowska, the league’s second-best scorer with 375 points, and the stability of Croatian outside hitter Laura Miloš, who ranks fifth in serve-receive with 51,32% efficiency.

Bielsko-Biała have been historically dominant against Radomka in the Polish League, with 11 wins to three. They triumphed in the last eight encounters, including the one held last week, during the final leg of the regular season.
