The top spot in the 2024-2025 Polish Women’s Tauron Liga standings can switch hands for the third time in as many weeks during the 12th round of the regular season, which will have matches going on from Saturday to Monday in the country.

Currently in second place, KS DevelopRes Rzeszów face seventh-placed MOYA Radomka Radom on Saturday, at 12:30 local time (11:30 GMT), and depend only on their own efforts to get to first place.

DevelopRes trail ŁKS Commercecon Łódź by one point (28 to 27), but with the league leaders sidelined this weekend as their match against #VolleyWrocław was postponed to December 30, the team from Rzeszów will move up to first place if they win at least two sets in this weekend’s encounter.

Third-placed PGE Grot Budowlani Łódź, who have 25 points, could also end the weekend at the top after falling from there in the last leg following a home defeat to Commercecon. For that to happen, they need DevelopRes to not score points against Radomka and to win their Saturday match against 11th-placed ITA TOOLS STAL Mielec, at 16:00 local time (15:00 GMT), 3-0 – a 3-1 victory would take the decision between Commercecon and them to the set ratio.

The 12th leg of the regular season marks the start of the second round in Poland, with teams meeting their opponents for the second time in 2024-2025. When DevelopRes and Radomka met on the league’s opening weekend, back in September, the team from Rzeszów triumphed in the tie-breaker.

Elite blockers on the court

Against Radomka, DevelopRes know they will need to bring their best offensive game as their opponents have two of the Tauron Liga’s best blockers in middle blockers Kamila Witkowska, who leads the league with 43 points, and Martyna Piotrowska, who comes third with 35.

“I know Kama (Witkowska) very well from the national team and know she’s a great blocker,” said DevelopRes star middle blocker Agnieszka Korneluk, who’s fourth in blocks in the Tauron Liga with 32. “This will certainly be an important aspect of the match and we’ll need to be very smart with our offensive choices. We definitely can’t underestimate Radomka because we played five sets in the first round and don’t want to do it again in front of our fans. We want to have a strong performance and take all three points.”

Following Saturday’s duels, the Tauron Liga will continue with two more matches – ninth-placed LOTTO Chemik Police will face 12th-placed Energa MKS Kalisz at 19:00 local time (18:00 GMT) and eighth-placed Metalkas Pałac Bydgoszcz will host sixth-placed UNI Opole at 20:30 local time (19:30 GMT). On Monday, fourth-placed BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała will play at home against tenth-placed Sokół & Hagric Mogilno at 17:30 local time (16:30 GMT).
