After overcoming the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the 2024-2025 Polish Women’s Tauron Liga playoffs, KS DevelopRes Rzeszów and ŁKS Commercecon Łódź start on Tuesday the fight for the national title.

The two best teams in the regular season will face off in the first match of the best-of-five series of the Tauron Liga Finals on Tuesday, at 20:30 local time (19:30 GMT), in Rzeszów, where the two sides will be looking to start ahead. The other four matches will be played on April 18, 22, 26 and 30.

This will be the second time the teams meet in the Tauron Liga Finals and, in the first one, in 2022-2023, Commercecon came out on top, winning the series by three victories to one. Earlier this season, in February, the rivals clashed for gold in the Polish Cup and this time DevelopRes emerged victorious, winning 3-0 to take the title.

Playing at home in the first match of the series, DevelopRes had a steady route to the Finals. The team from Rzeszów finished first in the regular season and needed just two matches to win each of their quarterfinal and semifinal series, eliminating defending champions LOTTO Chemik Police and Polish Super Cup winners BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała.

Looking to win their first Tauron Liga title after losing in the Finals in the last five seasons, DevelopRes have extra motivation to face Commercecon, who won the two duels between the teams in the regular season, handing them their only two domestic upsets so far in 2024-2025.

“We know we have lost to them twice this season, and it certainly gives us another thing to fight for,” team captain and outside hitter Monika Fedusio said. “We want to get back on them for those losses, and they certainly want to do the same after our victory at the Polish Cup, so I expect really tough matches. The two best teams will meet in the Finals, and I hope we can produce exciting matches.”

With 351 points scored, the 25-year-old Fedusio, who was a member of the Polish national team in the last four editions of the VNL, is the team’s leading scorer and ranks sixth in the league. Another key player for the team is Polish national team star middle blocker Agnieszka Korneluk, who appears in fourth place in blocks, with 81.

Commercecon stronger after complicated path

Commercecon, who will be playing for their fourth national title after victories in 1982-1983, 2018-2019 and 2022-2023, have been in the Finals six times before, settling for silver in three other occasions.

Their path to the Finals was much rougher than their opponents’ as, after finishing second in the regular season, they were upset by ITA TOOLS STAL Mielec at the start of the quarterfinals, needing three matches to advance, and defeated crosstown rivals PGE Grot Budowlani Łódź 2-0 in the semifinals thanks to a dramatic five-set victory last Tuesday.

“Despite everything we went through, our goal has never changed,” said outside hitter Zuzanna Górecka. “Since the start of the season we wanted to play for gold, and we’ll play for gold. During the series against Mielec, we told ourselves that if we managed to advance, we would win gold. It’s going to take us three steps to do it and, of course, it’s not going to be easy, but we are where we wanted to be and we’ll fight for it.”

A constant presence in the Polish national team, Górecka has been playing a major role for Commececon in the playoffs and appears in fourth place among the Tauron Liga’s top passers with a 52.07% efficiency rate. Ranked second in blocks (90), middle blocker Klaudia Alagierska is another individual standout in the team.

The two sides have met 32 times in the Polish League so far and have an even record, with each of them winning 16 times. Commercecon won the three most recent duels.

Interestingly, despite their solid campaigns in the Tauron Liga, the two sides made coaching changes almost at the same time, with Commercecon replacing Italian Alessandro Chiappini with former Polish national team standout Zbigniew Bartman on March 10 and DevelopRes bringing former French player Stéphane Antiga for the place that was previously occupied by Michal Mašek four days later.
