PGE Grot Budowlani Łódź were on the verge of suffering their third loss in the 2024-2025 Polish Women’s Tauron Liga in a terrible moment, but fought back to extend their winning streak in the tournament and remain in second place.

Chasing leaders KS DevelopRes Rzeszów at the top of the standings, the team from Łódź was strongly challenged by MOYA Randomka Radom in the fifth leg of the second round of the regular season on Saturday, but pulled off a 3-2 (25-22, 24-26, 25-10, 20-25, 15-7) victory to keep the race for first place open.

Set to meet next Friday, the two teams are separated by just one point as while Budowlani got to 41 (14 wins, two losses) after Saturday’s victory, DevelopRes reached 42 (15 wins, one loss) on Monday, when they topped #VolleyWrocław 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19) on the road.

It took real teamwork for Budowlani to overcome Radomka at home as the team got 19 points from outside hitter Paulina Damaske and 18 from each of Italian opposite Terry Enweonwu and outside hitter Karolina Drużkowska to secure the win.

Slovenian middle blocker Saša Planinšec produced 11 points, with nine kills and two aces, and received the MVP award.

“I’m glad that we managed to stay strong until the end of the match,” said libero Justyna Łysiak. “It was a real nervous match because both teams want to end the regular season as high as possible in the standings. It took us a lot of energy to win after playing in the CEV Champions League during the week and I’m glad that we managed to stay focused and that we’re taking two points.”

Polish national team opposite Monika Gałkowska led Radomka with 19 points (all in kills), while three of her teammates ended the match with 12 – outside hitters Laura Miloš and Kristiine Miilen and middle blocker Kornelia Garita.

Commercecon and Bielsko-Biała also drop sets

Ranked third and fourth respectively, ŁKS Commercecon Łódź and BKS BOSTIK ZGO Bielsko-Biała also dropped sets in their matches over the weekend. Commercecon played on Friday and, despite losing one set to defending champions LOTTO Chemik Police, still took all three points with their 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-20) victory, getting to 40 (13 wins, two losses) in the standings.

On Sunday, Bielsko-Biała also played on the road and were pushed to the tie-breaker against Metalkas Pałac Bydgoszcz before coming back from a two-set deficit to triumph 3-2 (19-25, 24-26, 25-16, 25-21, 15-9). With the two points earned, they now have 31 (11 wins, three losses).

The fifth leg of the second round of the regular season started on Thursday, with ITA TOOLS STAL Mielec beating UNI Opole 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-18), and also had Energa MKS Kalisz topping Sokół & Hagric Mogilno 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-19, 18-16) on Sunday.

The sixth leg of the second round will have six matches from Thursday to Monday, but before that, on Wednesday, Bielsko-Biała and Chemik will meet in a postponed encounter of the fourth leg.
