PFU BlueCats Ishikawa Kahoku became the fifth team to secure a spot in the playoffs of the women’s Daido Life SV.League as the seven double headers of the 20th leg unfolded this weekend. Meanwhile, in each of the two big match-ups – Osaka Marvelous against NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki and Saga Hisamitsu Springs against Victorina Himeji – the two sides exchanged victories.

PFU BlueCats Ishikawa Kahoku brought home the full six points from their visit to Denso Airybees Koriyama. On Saturday, they achieved a 3-1 (13-25, 28-26, 25-17, 25-22) turnaround in front of nearly 3,200 fans in the stands of the Horaiya Bonds Arena in Fukushima with a team-high 16 points from 19-year-old substitution outside hitter Anna Uemura. Her Brazilian counterpart Sabrina Machado topped the chart with 21 points for Denso. Opposite Melissa Valdes led BlueCats to an even more emphatic 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-20) victory on Sunday. She contributed a match-high 23 points, including three kill blocks. PFU improved to a 26-12 win-loss ratio and 81 points, catching up with third-placed Osaka on points and overtaking Himeji into fourth place in the current standings. They can no longer fall below the cut-off line for the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Denso dropped out of the playoff zone for the time being, sliding one spot down to ninth place on 18-20 and 56.
Table leaders NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki mastered a 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 26-24) sweep of the first match of their visit to defending champions Osaka Marvelous. American outside hitter Giovanna Day topped the scorer chart of the match with 15 points, including two blocks, for Red Rockets. On Sunday, with nearly three and a half thousand fans in the hall, the titanic duel unfolded in a dramatic five-set battle, which went 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 24-26, 25-19, 16-14) the way of the home team. Belgian opposite Lise Van Hecke shined with six kill blocks and a serving ace towards a match-high 30 points for Osaka. NEC top the standings on 32-6 and 93, while Marvelous stayed in third place on 27-11 and 81.
OSAKA MARVELOUS vs. NECR - Match Highlights
Saga Hisamitsu Springs and Victorina Himeji also traded wins in their double header. Himeji delivered a 3-2 (25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 19-25, 15-11) upset of their hosts Saga in front of 3,150 spectators on Saturday with a match-high 31 points from Italian opposite Camilla Mingardi and an impressive six kill blocks from Bulgarian middle Mira Todorova. Hisamitsu Springs reacted with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 28-26, 25-18) victory on Sunday, despite another five stuffs from Todorova. American opposite Stephanie Samedy spearheaded the winners with a match-high 25 points.
Queenseis Kariya claimed two road victories at Astemo Rivale Ibaraki, snatching the full six points from the double header. They started the weekend with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 27-25) sweep, spearheaded by outside Riri Kasai with 15 points, including two aces, while American opposite Mackenzie May put away a match-high 20 points, all in swings, for Astemo. On Sunday, Kariya had to come back from a set down and got the job done in four, 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-17), with Russian striker Sofya Kuznetsova leading the way with 31 points, including two blocks. Queenseis are in sixth place on 23-15 and 75. Astemo fell one position to 11th place on 14-24 and 46.
Gunma Green Wings put together two home wins over Okayama Seagulls and improved to 22-16 and 63 in seventh place. Okayama are second from the bottom, in 13th place on 4-34 and 15. The first match took four sets, 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-20), with Polish opposite Olivia Rozanski on fire with a 33-point contribution, including three blocks. The second game was a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-22) sweep with a 23-point match high from Rozanski.
Saitama Ageo Medics took advantage of Denso’s setback to take over their spot in the playoff zone with two home wins over Toray Arrows Shiga – 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-8, 25-20) with a match-high 18 points from opposite Fuyumihaui Okumuoba on Saturday and 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 23) with a match-high 13 points from American opposite Izabella Rapacz. Ageo climbed to eighth place on 19-19 and 53. Toray Arrows are third from the bottom, in 12th place on 6-32 and 19.
Kurobe Aqua Fairies overtook Astemo into 10th place on 16-22 and 48 after two shutouts of table trailers Aranmare Yamagata on the road – 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-18) on Saturday with a match-high 17 points from Dutch opposite Iris Scholten, and 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-13) on Sunday with Kurobe’s German outside Lena Stigrot and Aranmare’s sub-in opposite Mao Ogawa sharing the top scorer honors with 14 points each. Aranmare are stuck at the bottom of the standings, in 14th place on 3-35 and 11.
The 21st leg will start with a match on Friday, March 20, and continue with the remaining 13 games over the weekend, March 21 and 22.
