In front of close to seven thousand spectators at the iconic Yoyogi 1st National Gymnasium in Tokyo on Friday, Hiroshima celebrated a straight-set victory, but two of the three sets were pushed into overtime, 3-0 (34-32, 25-16, 26-24). American opposite Cooper Robinson led the way with a match-high 14 points for the winners. He put away 12 successful swings, one ace and one kill block. Also with one ace and one stuff under the belt, his cross-court teammate and captain Yudai Arai contributed a total of 12 points. So did Brazilian opposite Felipe Roque, who impressed with four kill blocks. Outside Rikuto Goto was the home team’s best scorer with 11 points, including one block.
“First of all, it was a very moving experience to play at the Yoyogi, known as the holy ground of volleyball,” commented Hiroshima’s Argentinean coach Carlos Weber after that match. “We had suffered disappointing losses to Tokyo Great Bears in the SV.League and in the Emperor's Cup, so we went into the match with a strong desire to get our revenge. We were repeatedly challenged by Tokyo Great Bears' tenacious play, but I believe our victory was due to our continued belief in the team.”
Saturday’s game offered an epic five-set battle, at the end of which Tokyo delighted the home crowd of almost nine thousand fans with a 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 23-25, 33-21, 15-13) victory. As many as three players shared the top scorer honors with 21 points each. Tokyo’s star opposite Bartosz Kurek hammered 19 kills in attack and two kill blocks for the winners. Robinson raised four kill blocks, fired one ace and spiked 16 in offense, while Arai registered 20 successful swings and one blocking point. A few more players reached the double digits – outside hitters Goto and Masahiro Yanagida with 17 and 16, respectively, and middle blockers Jan Kozamernik of Slovenia and Go Maruyama with 10 each for Tokyo, and Roque with 19, and middle blocker Hiromasa Miwa with 14 (including five stuffs) for Hiroshima.
“The two consecutive matches against the Hiroshima Thunders were extremely tough,” said Tokyo’s Finnish coach Kasper Vuorinen after that spectacular game. “Yesterday, we were constantly pushed back by the opponent's powerful offense and were unable to bring in our own style, resulting in a disappointing result. On the other hand, today's match was a great achievement in that we were able to stabilize our reception and create our own rhythm from there. Especially at crucial moments, we were able to tenaciously contain the opponent's ace and fight patiently, which I believe led to our five-set victory. It wasn't an easy match, but it was one that allowed us to grow as a team.”
At the end of the 13th leg, Thunders occupy fifth place on an 11-13 win-loss ratio and 35 points. With the same ratio, but only 32 points, Great Bears are just below them, in sixth place.
The 14th leg of regular season action will feature for double headers on Saturday and Sunday, February 7 and 8. Before that, on Sunday, February 1, the men’s All-Star Game is set to stir excitement at the Glion Arena in Kobe.
