Osaka Bluteon v Aichi

The 19th leg of the men’s Daido Life SV.League in Japan is set offer a couple of high-profile match-ups between top-five teams among the total of five exciting double headers coming up over the weekend, March 14 and 15. One of them will be a remake of last season’s semifinal between Osaka Bluteon and JTEKT Stings Aichi. The other will set third-placed Wolfdogs Nagoya against fifth-placed Tokyo Great Bears.

Both matches of the Osaka Bluteon against JTEKT Stings Aichi double header will be evening games, serving off at 18:05 local time (09:05 UTC). They will be played at the Ookini Arena Maishima. Last year’s SV.League regular season winners – FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship silver medalists Bluteon – are running second in the current standings on a 26-6 win-loss ratio and 76 points. They have already qualified for the playoffs and the next goal for them is to secure a top-two regular season finish, which comes with a direct ticket to the semifinals. Aichi, on the other hand, stand fourth on 20-12 and 58, behind third-placed Nagoya on set ratios, and are yet to stamp their playoff berth mathematically. Last year, JTEKT Stings won both matches of their semifinal series against Bluteon to advance to the final. This season, the two teams have already played four times at Aichi. In November, Osaka won by 3-1 and 3-2, and in January, they swept the first match of that double header in straight sets, before losing the most recent encounter in four sets the following day.

Wolfdogs Nagoya will welcome Tokyo Great Bears to the Entrio at 14:35 (05:35) on Saturday and at 13:35 (04:35) on Sunday. While Nagoya stand third on 20-12 and 58, Tokyo occupy fifth place on 17-15 and 50. Great Bears hosted the previous four encounters with Wolfdogs this season. In November, the visitors from Nagoya swept both matches in straight sets. The squad from the capital retaliated with 3-2 and 3-0 in January.

Defending champions and table leaders Suntory Sunbirds Osaka will look for rebound from their shocking straight-set losses at Nippon Steel Sakai Blazers last weekend that ended their 29-game winning streak, as they take off on another trip, this time to Toray Arrows Shizuoka. The two matches at the Kitazato Arena Fuji will start at 14:05 (05:05). Playoffs-bound Suntory Sunbirds are on top of the standings on 29-3 and 84, and by the end of the weekend, they could potentially have secured a direct passage to the semis. Toray Arrows, on the other hand, are third from the bottom, in eighth place on 10-22 and 31. It will be the third double header between the two teams this season. Suntory earned the full three points from each of the previous four games, two on the road and two at home.

Before the double header between Hiroshima Thunders and Nippon Steel Sakai Blazers, the two teams are situated on both sides of the cut-off line for the playoffs. The hosts from Hiroshima are just above it, in sixth place on 14-18 and 44, while their visitors from Sakai are just below it, in seventh place on 12-20 and 36. Even if they sweep the full six points from their visit to the Hiroshima Sunplaza Hall, Blazers will not be able to surpass Thunders in the standings, but will get dangerously close behind them. The matches will start at 14:05 (05:05) on Saturday and at 13:05 (04:05) on Sunday. The two teams traded wins in each of the previous two double headers between them earlier this season.

In a clash at the very bottom of the table, Voreas Hokkaido will entertain Nagano Tridents at the Recruit Staffing Rick&Sue Asahikawa Gymnasium at 13:05 (04:05) on both competition days. Voreas are in ninth place on 9-23 and 28, while Nagano are stuck in 10th on 3-29 and 15. In December, Voreas put together two road wins at Nagano, 3-1 and 3-2.
