Reigning world champions Sada Cruzeiro started the New Year on the right foot as the Minas Gerais side began the second round of the 2024-2025 Brazilian Men’s Superliga with a solid victory on Thursday.

Playing in front of their home fans, at the Riacho Stadium, in Contagem, Sada Cruzeiro delivered a strong performance to sweep fellow 2024 FIVB Men’s Club World Championship participants Praia Clube 3-0 (25-15, 32-30, 25-16).

The victory kept the eight-time Superliga champions at the top of the standings with 32 points (11 wins, one loss), three ahead of in-state rivals Itambé Minas, who will be their next opponents, on Wednesday.

The MVP of Sada Cruzeiro’s victory at last year’s Club World Championship, veteran opposite Wallace de Souza led the team against Praia, producing a match-high 17 points, with 12 kills, three aces and two blocks.

Fellow Rio 2016 Olympic champion Douglas Souza took home the match’s MVP award. The 29-year-old outside hitter, who had lost his spot in the team during the Club World Championship, returned to the starting lineup in great form, tallying 11 points, with nine kills, one block and one ace.

“Our team is just like that, we’re never done winning,” Douglas remarked. “Everyone in our squad is ready to play and we showed that one more time tonight. We started the year on the right foot, with a nice win at home and we want to keep the pace. We have a critical match against Minas next week and we’ll prepare for it.”

Ranked fourth in the Superliga with 22 points (seven wins, five losses), Praia had opposite Franco Paese and outside hitter Maicon França splitting their scoring load – each of them produced 16 points.

Thursday’s match marked the fifth encounter between the teams in the 2024-2025 season and Sada Cruzeiro continue undefeated after winning all three matches in the Mineiro Championship and the duel in the first round of the Superliga.
