Gerdau Minas won a key match in the eighth leg of the second round of the 2025-2026 Brazilian Women's Superliga regular season on Friday and solidified their spot at the top of the standings.

Playing at home, the Belo Horizonte side swept (25-23, 30-28, 25-17) second-placed SESC RJ Flamengo to not only continue in first place, but also create some separation from their rivals.

With the result, Minas turned a two-point deficit into a four-point lead in just two legs, getting to 50 points (17 wins, two losses), while Flamengo, which endured their second-straight loss on Friday, stopped at 46 (16 wins, three losses).

Minas' top scorer in the Superliga, Canadian national team outside hitter Hilary Johnson kept her excellent form and earned the match's MVP award after producing a team-high 16 points (15 kills, one block).

"It was a great team effort from our side," she reflected. "We had difficult moments in each set, but we still managed to remain focused to play our roles and help our teammates. I'd like to share this trophy with the entire team."

Brazilian national team middle Júlia Kudiess, with 11 points (eight kills, two blocks, one ace), and Russian opposite Maria Khaletskaya, with ten (all in kills), also offered important contributions to Minas' success.

Back in Flamengo's starting lineup after recovering from an ankle injury, American outside hitter Simone Lee topped all scorers with 20 points (18 kills, two blocks).

"We need to work even harder," outside hitter Karina Souza remarked. "Some situations happened tonight and we need to look into them and understand where we need to improve for the remainder of the season. There are still many matches in front of us, and we'll push to get a win in front of our fans next week."

Praia and Fluminense win five-setters

Two other matches were held on Friday and both of them went to five sets. In one of them, third-placed Dentil Praia Clube struggled to defeat tenth-placed Paulistano Barueri 3-2 (21-25, 25-11, 25-22, 24-26, 16-14) in Uberlândia.
